Mark Millar Launches 2017 Millarworld Talent Search

Comic book writer and movie producer Mark Millar is holding another international comic book talent hunt. Launching today, this year's Millarworld talent search follows in the footsteps of “The Millarworld Annual 2016,” which featured the work of 13 winners. The Millarworld talent search is looking for aspiring creators - six writers, six artists and one cover artist - to work on existing Millarworld properties like “Kick-Ass” and “Nemesis.” The winners' work will be published in next year's “Millarworld Annual 2017.”

“I've always been very precious about letting other people do my creations, but the industry always need new blood and last year's entries were just beyond stellar,” said Mark Millar in the press release. “Comics have been really good to me and I want to do what I can with my limited time to help other creators get into print.”

Here are the winners of the previous contest, whose work was published in “The Millarworld Annual 2016.”

Profits for the annual will be donated to the Hero Initiative.

The deadline for entries is November 30, 2016, with winners being announced on December 23, 2016. Additional information and submission guidelines will be posted at millarworld.tv and can also be seen in the full press release, posted below.

MARK MILLAR LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL COMIC BOOK TALENT SEARCH

Award-winning comic book writer and film producer Mark Millar is launching a worldwide search for new comic book talent on September 5, after the outstanding success of The Millarworld Annual 2016.

The annual contest gives aspiring comic book creators the chance to write and draw existing Millarworld characters and have their work published in the Millarworld Annual 2017.

Millarworld launched 13 careers with the Annual 2016, picking winners from thousands of entries submitted from every corner of the globe.

Winners are all paid DC and Marvel starter rates [$90 per page for writers, $200 per page for artists] for their published work.

Just as with The Annual 2016, all profits for this year's annual will go to the Hero Initiative charity.

“I've always been very precious about letting other people do my creations, but the industry always need new blood and last year's entries were just beyond stellar,” says Mark Millar. “Comics have been really good to me and I want to do what I can with my limited time to help other creators get into print.

“The response for the Millarworld Annual 2016 search was astounding, and we published creators from as far afield as New Zealand, India and Nigeria. We had a really diverse group of talent in there, but I'd like to get even more female and minority group creators published this time. This year we'd like to see greater representation across the board, and uncover more hidden talent from all walks of life.”

Millarworld is looking for six writers, six artists and a cover artist for the Millarworld Annual 2017.

This year, hopeful entrants are being set challenges from some brand new Millarworld titles. Empress and Huck join the lineup of potential series that budding artists and writers can choose from.

The deadline for entries is November 30, 2016. All entrants will be judged by a selected panel and the winners will be announced on December 23, 2016.

Separate submission guidelines for artists and writers can be found on the Millarworld community forum at millarworld.tv

The stories will all be four or five pages long, much like the short stories comic-creators traditionally started out on, and the characters being used are as follows:

KICKASS & HITGIRL (5 pages):This story should be set during KickAss 13.

EMPRESS (5 pages): This story should be set when Emporia was still living on Earth and Dane was her royal bodyguard.

NEMESIS (4 pages): This story should be set somewhere during the first volume.

HUCK (5 pages): This should be a simple story set around the time of #1 and before Huck's gifts were known to the public.

SUPERCROOKS (4 pages): This story can be set anytime.

SUPERIOR (5 pages): This story can be set anytime.

Notes from previous Millarworld Annual winners:

Myron Macklin, artist: “ It was quite an honor to win the Millarworld talent contest. What I find amazing is that Mark has faith and courage enough to take a chance at mining new talent in a different stream than the rest of the industry. Little did I know while working on my creatorowned book, that some of it would be seen by the likes of Mark Millar. With winning the contest and Millarworld now as a credit, I have a renewed sense that anything is possible.”

Cliff Bumgardner, Writer: “Winning the Millarworld talent contest is akin to being handed a golden ticket from Willy Wonka himself. I came up in this field reading Mark's books, first as a fan and then later as a hopeful creator. They inspired me, they entertained me, and maybe more than anything they cemented the idea in my mind of what a true comic book could and should be – a 24-page journey into worlds where anything is possible, no matter how fantastic or sincere. So having my own work acknowledged by Mark is an honor on its own, but then to get to share this experience with such an incredible team of creators is mind-ripping.”
