EXCLUSIVE: Mike Oeming Draws Cave Carson in Time-Lapse Video

EXCLUSIVE: Mike Oeming Draws Cave Carson in Time-Lapse Video

With the release earlier this month of the new “Doom Patrol” #1, DC Comics' Young Animal line - a “pop-up” mature readers imprint curated by rock star/comic book writer Gerard Way - has officially arrived.

But there's more to Young Animal than just “Doom Patrol” - “Shade, the Changing Girl,” “Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye” and “Mother Panic” are all still yet to debut. In advance of the October debut of “Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye,” CBR has the first look at a time-lapse video created by series artist Michael Avon Oeming, showing how the “Powers” co-creator brings the trippy series to life via pencil and ink.

This video is one of many process pieces that Oeming has shared on his YouTube page.

“Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye” is co-written by Way and Jonathan Rivera, and brings the title character - created by France Herron & Bruno Premiani and first seen in 1960's “Brave and the Bold” #31 - out of obscurity and into his own ongoing series, with cybernetic eye in tow. Like the rest of the Young Animal imprint, the series aims to take concepts rooted in the DC Universe, and add experimental and surrealistic twists.

“When I was looking through the DC encyclopedia for characters for this imprint, [Cave Carson's] entry is only half an inch, and the name jumped out,” Way told CBR in an interview. “And I was like 'Who's Cave Carson?' They didn't have much written about him, it was just like: He's a spelunker, and he's good at hand-to-hand combat … and he has a cybernetic eye. And that was it. And I was like, cool, that's what this is about - it's about the fact that there's no information about his eye, so we're going to explore that.”

“Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye” #1 is scheduled for release on Oct. 19.
