The Simpsons Says Being Right on Trump Presidency Prediction 'Sucks'

The Simpsons Says Being Right on Trump Presidency Prediction 'Sucks'

There are worse things than being wrong, particularly if if you're a writer for “The Simpsons.”

While the show just celebrated its 600th episode and record-setting renewal through Season 30, the decades- old cartoon addressed a less momentous achievement in the opening to its latest episode: its prediction of a Donald Trump presidency in 2000. Watch the show's most recent chalkboard gag below.

The gag is a reference to the now (in)famous Season 11 episode “Bart to the Future.” One of the show's popular flash forward episodes, this particular future depicted America's first straight female President Lisa inheriting a completely broke country from President Trump.

Though aided by hindsight, “Simpsons” writer Dan Greaney asserts that the plot detail was more than a silly joke. “It was a warning to America,” Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter in March. “That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”

“The Simpsons” other notable references to the 2016 election have come through special clips released online, including a nightmare-ish 3AM call for Trump and a surprise run-in with a certain bare- chested Russian at the voting booths.

The silver lining for Hillary Clinton supporters? If “Bart to the Future” truly is indicative of the future, a sensible, spiky-haired woman may be our next President.
