In honor of Wonder Woman's 75th anniversary, Variety has released a time-lapse video of DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee drawing the unstoppable Amazon. Throughout the voiceover for the 90-second video, Lee discusses his approach to drawing.

Says Lee, “The most important thing about drawing a character – especially like Wonder Woman, who's so iconic, so well-known – is really capturing the emotional state of the character, trying to represent visually the things that she stands for: power, equality, strength, wisdom. These are hard things to actually draw.” Lee recently discussed his process in an SDCC spotlight panel.
Lee has worked as a comic book artist and writer for nearly thirty years. He began his career at Marvel, where he worked on titles such as “Punisher War Journal” and “The Uncanny X-Men,” before running Wildstorm Productions as part of Image Comics. In 1998, he moved to DC Comics, where he has worked on “Justice League,” “Superman” and other core titles. Perhaps his most buzzworthy rendition of Wonder Woman came in the Klimt-inspired “power couple” variant cover for “Justice League” #12 in 2012.

In time-lapse, Lee's process might look easy, but he says that fluidity comes from years of work. “I put in countless hours behind the scenes, drawing over and over and over,” Lee says in the video, “When I draw a face, it's like signing an elaborate signature, an autograph.”
