'Deadpool' Wants You to Get Touchy-Feely in New Cancer Awareness PSAs

'Captain America: Civil War' Is the Highest-Testing Marvel Film Since 'The Winter Soldier'

Not that you were particularly worried or anything, but Marvel’s recent test screenings for Captain America: Civil War have yielded the most positive audience reactions since The Winter Soldier. Previously, the second Captain America film had received the highest marks at test screenings, which sounds about right considering that it’s the best MCU film to date. Could Civil War be even better?

Wolverine Probably Won't Be Recast in the 'X-Men' Universe When Hugh Jackman Leaves

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for over 15 years. He’s appeared on screen as the iconic X-Men character in seven films, including his uncredited cameo in X-Men: First Class, and by the time The Wolverine 2 rolls around, we can round that number up to eight (and that’s not including the potential for cameos in X-Men: Apocalypse, which he’s denied, as well as Gambit). Fans have been wondering if Wolverine will be recast once Jackman exits the franchise, but according to Bryan Singer and producer Simon Kinberg, that’s not likely to happen.

Mark Ruffalo Says Hulk's Storyline Leading to 'Avengers' Finale Will Feel Like a Standalone Movie

Let’s get this out of the way first: no, a Hulk standalone/spinoff movie is never happening any time in the near future. The rights are all mucked up with Universal and Marvel and creatively it just doesn’t seem like something Marvel is willing to take the risk on right now. But. BUT! Mark Ruffalo has said that you’re about to get the next best thing to a Hulk movie in Hulk’s storyline that plays out over Thor: Ragnarok and the two-part Avengers: Infinity War finale.

Go Team Venture! : The Best Venture Bros Fan Art

Let’s go ahead and get two things out of the way immediately. First, while the fan art I’ve collected for you here is all great, it goes without saying (but I’m going to say it anyway) that this is only a small portion of all the incredible Venture Bros. fan art that’s floating around out there in the wild of the internet. So if I left some of your favorites out, it just means I didn’t come across it or had to leave it out for one reason or another.
Second, if you’re familiar at all with the Venture Bros. then you probably have a very good idea why some characters and a lot of the fan art that’s out there for this show couldn’t be featured. You know who and what I’m talking about. (Sorry, Molotov.) Honestly, even some of the tamer stuff I could include is already pushing it. Even though it honors many of the tropes and trappings of some our favorite kid-friendly cartoons and characters, the Venture Bros. has always been a show for the grown-ups that grew up on those kid-friendly cartoons. Or, you know, teenagers and young adults who are kinda familiar with them thanks to Cartoon Network.

'Deadpool' Director's Cut Will Include Extra Footage, Will Be 'Even More Raw'

Deadpool will be the first R-rated Marvel movie since 2008’s Punisher: War Zone; it was officially rated R by the MPAA for “strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity.” Pretty intense stuff for a superhero movie! But, if you need your Deadpool to get even more intense, star T.J. Miller says there is a planned Director’s Cut of the film that will be “even more raw” than what you see in theaters.

The Teen Titans Arrive to Tackle the Justice League in the DC Animated Cinematic Universe

Every year, Warner Bros and DC release two animated features that take place in their new home video DC canon, continually building on the groundwork laid by previous entries, and it's these continually expanding animated universe films that have been the driving force behind DC Comics' home video expansion. This April, the Teen Titans will emerge in this universe for the first time in Justice League vs Teen Titans.

The film centers around Damian Wayne being sent to learn teamwork from the Teen Titans after he nearly botches a Justice League mission. Of course, he just happens to arrive as the Leaguers find themselves at the mercy of Trigon, Raven's demonic father. As you can guess, Trigon's back to attempt to take over the world once more, and it will be up to the Teen Titans to rally and save the day from the hordes of hellspawn and brainwashed heroes.

After a half-season of set-up in both Arrow and The Flash, it’s finally here: the CW’s latest super-show, Legends of Tomorrow. Featuring Arrow’s Atom and White Canary, as well as both halves of Firestorm, the Hawkpersons, and rogues Captain Cold and Heat Wave from The Flash, the show follows Rip Hunter and his team of misfits across time.

Archie Puts The Spotlight On The Sweetheart Of A Nation In A Collection Of 'Ginger'

I like to think that I've got a pretty comprehensive knowledge of some of the more obscure Archie characters, but I have to admit that I've never really read much of Ginger. To be honest, though, that's understandable. The series only had ten issues back in 1952, and just to put that into context, That Wilkin Boy, the series about Jughead's cousin Bingo Wilkin, somehow managed to run for 50.
But fortunately, we now have the opportunity to get caught up thanks to the latest installment of the Archie 75 Series, which features a 75-page digital collection of Ginger's lovestruck adventures. Check out a preview below!

'Justice League Action' Brings Bite-sized Heroics to the Cartoon Network

DC's Trinity will return to television in an all-new animated series on the Cartoon Network for the first time since Justice League Unlimited went off the air in 2006. While Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman have made some animated appearances elsewhere, Justice League Action will reunite the three biggest heroes at DC Comics to star in their first weekly adventures in seven years.
What's more, Kevin Conroy is coming back to the role that made him one of the biggest stars in DC and Warner Bros. film and television, Batman. Though he's frequently reprised the role over in the home video and video game realms, Conroy hasn't dabbled with the voice of Batman on a recurring series since JLU ended. The actors for Superman and Wonder Woman haven't been revealed as of yet, but I suppose we can all keep our fingers crossed for Tim Daly and Susan Eisenberg to make the dream team reunion a reality.

The Grand Compendium Of Martial Arts Instruction Ads From 1970s Comic Books, Volume One

As we all know from reading comic books and watching movies, the 1970s were a time when lethal ninjas and club-wielding goons lurked around every corner, kicking sand into the faces of honest, hard-working comics readers at every opportunity. The people cried out for something, anything, that could save them from these ruffians, and as they always have, comic books stepped up to help in the most efficient and effective way possible: Advertising!

Comics had always provided their readers with the most exciting purchasing opportunities — nuclear submarines, X-Ray glasses, even the occasional piece of real Kryptonite — but between 1971 and 1974, they were full of opportunities to train yourself in the lethal arts of self-defense. That's why we here at ComicsAlliance are compiling a comprehensive list of the greatest promises for deadly hands and death touches in this, our Grand Compendium Of Comic Book Martial Arts Instructional Advertisements From The '70s.

Don't Be Sad, Black Widow, Your Civil War Mopeez Plush is Coming Soon

Most of Funko's collectibles are all about being cute. Mopeez however rely on a bit of schadenfreude. They're sad little versions of your favorite characters, but you're supposed to get enjoyment from how adorably disappointed they are over whatever it is little stuffed characters get upset about. We've seen some Marvel and DC Mopeez before, but this next batch will actually add two of the most sought after characters to the fold with the additions of Black Widow and Black Panther.
Now the upcoming Captain America: Civil War series does include Vision and Crossbones, for reasons that will likely never make sense to me. Vision I sort of get. He's an okay guy, even if they did make him a little too OP in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Crossbones' movie costume does have a certain appeal, it's still a weird character to make a plush toy for given his roots. Also, there's no better character in this movie to fill out the box? Does anyone care about Bucky Barnes as much as Steve Rogers?

Disney Promises More 'Star Wars' After 'Episode 9,' Says the MCU Will 'Go On Forever'

With two more Star Wars episodes and at least three spinoff / anthology films on the way, it’s hard to think too much about the future of the franchise beyond that, though we have been curious about Disney and Lucasfilm’s plans for the future of the series after Episode IX hits theaters in 2019. Will there be more sequels? A new trilogy? More spinoffs? According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, Star Wars will continue on after Episode IX, and the studio has no plans to end that other major franchise anytime soon, either.

It's Getting Hoth in Here: Star Wars Battlefront's Upcoming Updates Promise New Maps, Modes, Characters and More

Since its launch in November, millions of battles have been waged for galactic supremacy in Star Wars Battlefront. Through all that time, DICE has kept its plans for expansion relatively under wraps, save for the free Battle for Jakku update released during Star Wars: The Force Awakens' launch. Now that the dust has settled a bit, the developer's finally pulling back the curtain on the add-ons planned for the space shooter, and it looks like fans of the classic trilogy will have plenty to look forward to throughout 2016.
New maps and modes are great and all, but it's really all about the extra hero characters and the clothes they wear. Most importantly, DICE is releasing a free update this week that will add Hoth costumes for Luke and Han when they're present on the icy planet's maps. Luke and his busted up face are nice and all, but I'm more excited to see how DICE plans to handle the great brown/blue debate fans of Han Solo in Empire Strikes Back have waged for decades. Well, so long as they haven't seen the irrefutable proof in the behind the scenes documentaries on the Blu-ray collection.

Marvelous In Every Moment: A Tribute To Sal Buscema

If you're a fan of classic Marvel, Sal Buscema is most likely responsible for many of your favorite comic book memories. He was one of Marvel's most prolific and versatile artists through the '70s and '80s, working on some of the most famous sagas of the era, while also taking on a number of lesser-known (yet no less wonderful) assignments.
At one time or another, he drew pretty much every major Marvel title, including Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thor, Marvel Team-Up, Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, Nova, Eternals, Marvel Two-In-One, New Mutants, Iron Man, X-Men, Marvel Spotlight, Ghost Rider, Ms. Marvel, Marvel Premiere, Howard The Duck, Master Of Kung Fu, and all three major Spider-Man series (Amazing, Spectacular, and Web Of). He pencilled defining tales of Captain America and The Defenders, and a ten-year run on Incredible Hulk. And he's also a skilled inker, whose collaborations with other artists, most notably his brother John Buscema, resulted in some of the most memorable books of the Bronze Age.

The Trailer For 'Great Detective Pikachu' Is Here, Promising A Battle Against Pokemon Crimes

Magical Girls Versus Aliens In Alex Heberling's 'The Hues' [Back Pages]

Crowdfunding has become an important part of how comics get made, allowing creators to pitch their work directly to readers, and providing opportunities for comics that traditional publishers may not consider. The John McClane Of The DC Universe: Steve Orlando Talks 'Midnighter'

Over the past eight issues, Midnighter has sent its title character on a grand tour of some of the weirdest corners of the DC Universe, pitting a leather-clad fighter with a computer brain against custom-made vampires, combination animals, an endless string of easily murdered clones, and more. And through it all, writer Steve Orlando and artists David Messina, Stephen Mooney, ACO and Alec Morgan have crafted one of the best books on the stands, full of adventure, action, and a surprising amount of gut-punching emotional content.

It's a great book, which is why I spoke to Orlando about the process of fitting the Midnighter into a world that already has Batman, the big reveal in #6, the rocky relationship between Midnighter and Apollo, and the plans for the book's future --- which involve the Midnighter getting shot out of a giant gun into space. It's based on a true story.

Jim Zub And Nelson Daniel Take Minsc (And Boo) To Ravenloft In 'Dungeons & Dragons' #1

For those of you who aren't quite up to speed on the specifics of D&D settings and characters, here's what you need to know: Ravenloft, originally published in 1990, is a realm of gothic horror, a misty, vaguely Bavarian dimension ruled over by the Draculesque Strahd von Zarovich. Minsc, who first appeared in 1998's Baldur's Gate video game, is a good-hearted berserker with a pet miniature giant space hamster named Boo. When IDW relaunches Dungeons & Dragons this April, Jim Zub and Nelson Daniel are slamming those two concepts into each other, and hijinx, one assumes, will ensue. To set the stage, I spoke to Zub --- who returns to Minsc's adventures after last year's Legends of Baldur's Gate --- about what this spooky new setting means for the character and his adventures! Buy This Book: Guy Adams And Jimmy Broxton's 'Goldtiger'

If you don't know what it is going in, Guy Adams and Jimmy Broxton's Goldtiger: The Poseidon Complex has one of the best hooks I've ever seen: "Hey, did you hear 2000 AD was putting out a collection of Goldtiger? Oh, you've never heard of it? That's not surprising, it was only ever popular in Malta back in the '60s, but it was this newspaper strip about two fashion photographers who were also secret agent mercenaries. You gotta read it, though - the story behind the strip is so intense that the artist, Antonio Baretti, wound up in a mental hospital." It is, to say the least, a pretty intriguing setup. If, however, you do know what it is going in, it somehow gets even better. Continue reading…

La Vie, L'Armor: Sideshow's Lex Luthor Statue Suits Up

Is it the suit that makes the man, or the man that makes the suit? In Lex Luthor's case, it's probably a bit of both. The guy is one of the smartest in the DC Universe, but all the brains in the world can't help him take on Superman mano a alieno. (Yes, hand-to-alien; shush pedants.) That's what drives him, in part, to develop his big, bad power suit. Sure, the suit itself didn't come around until the '80s, meaning it took Lex almost 30 years to realize he'd need some assistance to take on the Man of Steel, but all that matters is that he got there eventually. While Luthor and his bold purple and green power armor have been celebrated with action figures as far back as Super Powers in 1984, the LexCorp founder hasn't been captured quite like he has in Sideshow Collectibles' latest statue. Co-designed by Kris Anka, who's had his hand in many of Sideshow's DC Premium Format Figures, Lex stands atop a LexCorp building, poised to give Superman his comeuppance. Just look at that smarmy bastard. It's hard not to admire that unflinching confidence in the face of a man (from another planet) who is clearly better than you. Continue reading…

On The Cheap: DC's 'Legends Of Tomorrow' Sale Features Brubaker And Phillips On Hawkman (For Real)

I gotta be honest with you, folks: I am pretty excited about DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The fact that we're living in this magical time where we can get a giant, live-action crossover between DC's second-string heroes as a major television event does my heart good. And it also might be the source of the weirdest Comixology sale I've ever seen. The big Legends of Tomorrow sale has thrown in stuff as weird as the '90s Power of the Atom, the Blackest Night and Brightest Day crossovers, and even a seven-issue Final Crisis tie-in so that readers can catch up on Heatwave and Captain Cold's previous adventures. But if you only have one dollar and you want to check out the single best issue of the bunch, then you need to pick up Hawkman #27 --- also known as the one time that the team behind Criminal, The Fade Out and Fatale did a story about a grumpy bird man who hits things with a mace. If You Choose To Look At The Cover For 'Romeo And/or Juliet,' Continue Reading

Back when Ryan North launched his Kickstarter to publish To Be Or Not To Be, a chooseable-path version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, he made the promise that if it was successful enough, he'd work on a similarly interactive version of Romeo & Juliet. Now, it's happening, and while we've known for a while that it's set to hit shelves this summer, today we have a brand new cover by Noelle Stevenson to go along with it. And considering that it involves Romeo and Juliet battling a giant robot with buzzsaw hands and laser eyes, I think it's fair to say that once again, North has drastically improved on his source material. Plus, I think there's a distinct possibility that Romeo might become a Batman. Continue reading…

Here's Your First Official Look at the Movie Justice League!

Like Quicksilver trying to keep up with the Flash, DC’s movie offerings have lagged far behind Marvel’s Cinematic Universe for almost a decade. But DC and Warner Bros. are stepping up their superhero game in a big way in 2016. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in just over two months, with Suicide Squad trailing not far behind. After that, the floodgates open: Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, and, of course, the Justice League. And that one comes in two parts, in 2017 and 2019.

That first Justice League movie isn’t due for another year, but the marketing onslaught is about to kick off, as DC Films just launched its official Facebook page with a very cool piece of artwork: the first official look at the movie Justice League, in concept art form.

Super: Can We Have Nice Things? The Big Gay Poe Dameron Question

Poe Dameron is probably only accidentally a gay hero. He wasn't originally meant to survive the first act of Star Wars: The Force Awakens according to writer/director J.J. Abrams, so he doesn't have a real arc of his own. On paper, Poe Dameron is just a device to advance the plot. It's in Oscar Isaac's performance that he becomes something special, and someone Abrams knew he had to keep around. Isaac gives Poe Dameron his charisma and smoldering intensity, and because his primary (human) relationship in the movie is with John Boyega's Finn, he gets to direct that charm and intensity towards him. In one of the characters' most pored over scenes together --- a scene that only exists because of Poe Dameron's reprieve from death --- the pilot gives Finn a look that's indistinguishable from lust, even biting his own lip as he tells him to keep the jacket they've come to share. It's one of the gayest things I've seen in a blockbuster movie, in the most positive and celebratory sense of the word, and it gave us reason to hope that Poe Dameron could be Star Wars' first onscreen gay hero. But is Poe Dameron actually gay, and what happens to our hopes and dreams if he's not? Continue reading…

Warner Bros. Casts Connie Nielsen as Wonder Woman's Mom

Though Wonder Woman is currently filming in Italy, the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe (DCCU?) film still had one important part to fill. The role of Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Some may have assumed that Robin Wright was playing that part, but it turns out she is not and Warner Bros. has just announced who is: Connie Nielsen.

The Gladiator actress has joined the cast to film a small, but important part of the Wonder Woman movie. Nielsen joins Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis and Ewen Bremner in the superhero film. Director Patty Jenkins had originally approached Nicole Kidman for the Hippolyta role, but the actress had to back out because of scheduling issues.

Prime 1 Studio Busts Out a Batman: Arkham Knight, Uh, Bust

I think I'm starting to understand where Bruce Wayne gets all his money. I mean, the guy clearly licenses out his and Batman's likenesses to every company on the planet, and the fees he must recoup on return are clearly significant. Surely Wayne Enterprises can't still be making money after all these years of secretly funding Batman's war on crime. I mean, it was mildly feasible back in the early going when it was just Bruce rolling around Gotham. But now with all those subsidiaries and dependents running around the globe, it's hard to imagine anything Wayne Enterprises develops making as much money as birthday hats, cake pans, cookie cutters, wall paper, toothbrushes, video games, action figures and statues. I mean, we have to be serious about this for one minute. If all you do is military research and development projects you never let the military actually have, that money is going to dry up eventually. Probably. Then again, there are an awful lot of projects developed that never do see the light of day in practical applications, but those companies still keep cashing checks. I suppose though many of those manufacturers show the armed forces at least something to keep them dragging along. Batman just locks it up in a cave where only he and his butler can touch it. I guess that's why we see so many collectibles bearing his likeness, like this new bust from Prime 1 Studios. Continue reading…

Poe Dameron, Our Gay Space Boyfriend, Gets Own Marvel Comic From Soule & Noto

They almost killed him off in the first version of the script, but it looks like the decision to keep Poe Dameron around in Star Wars: The Force Awakens has paid off. The hunkiest hero ever named for a Teletubby, Poe Dameron is going to be make the leap from the screen (and fan's dreams) to the pages of a new comic from Charles Soule and Phil Noto this spring.

Announced by USA Today, Star Wars: Poe Dameron will launch in April as an ongoing, delivering tales of Poe's time with the Resistance before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While that might mean we won't be seeing any team-ups or (more than) friendly embraces with Finn, Soule promised that this new book will flesh out Poe's character as the hot-shot flyboy in the Resistance X-Wing squadron even more.

Kyle Starks' 'Sexcastle' Optioned By Fox, With 'Workaholics' Creators And Russo Brothers Attached To Direct

Good news for fans of stories about stabbing, nunchucks, Road House and puns: Sexcastle, the original graphic novel by Kyle Starks that is pretty heavily involved with all of those things, has been picked up by Fox to be made into a film. As revealed in an announcement at Deadline, it's set to be directed by Kyle Newacheck and produced by Mike Larocca and Anthony and Joe Russo. Blake Anderson is set to star as Shane Sexcastle, an assassin who retired from killing and moved to a small town, and --- as you might expect --- ended up having to kill a whole lot of people anyway.

What's Marvel Hinting At Now? (Is The World Ready For A 'Slingers' Revival?)

Marvel released a bafflingly oblique teaser image on Tuesday, the words 'DEAD NO MORE' against a black background, prompting fans to speculate which of Marvel's heroes is next in line for a resurrection, even as they're debating which hero will die (for a while) in the pages of Civil War II. Before any kind of consensus could be achieved, Marvel released a second teaser today, 'BEST BEWARE MY STING', against a black and yellow background. A quote from Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, the line and colors both suggest the character Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne. But Janet already came back from the dead; surely the first teaser can't be about her? So what other theories do we have? Well... is it possible that Marvel is hinting at a relaunch of Slingers? Batman and Superman Slug it Out in Kotobukiya's Latest Statues

Since the conclusion of The Dark Knight Returns, one of the most iconic images at DC Comics has been that of Superman versus Batman on a city street. It's become such a part of the history between DC's two biggest male heroes that the fabled fight has been a major part of the promotion for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The upcoming feature wears its DKR inspirations on its sleeve, despite protestations from the creatives that it has little to do with Frank Miller, Klaus Janson and Lynn Varley's 80s epic. You can hardly find a piece of merchandising from the film that doesn't feature Batman in the infamous armor suit. Superman of course looks the same because he's Superman. Kotobukiya is the latest licensee to get in on the Batman V Superman hype train, though it's hardly unexpected. Koto's had a longstanding working relationship with DC Comics that's led to a number of statues in all sorts of sizes and styles. Recently, Kotobukiya's gotten into separate statues that work in conjunction with one another to create a diorama of sorts. Like the Hulkbuster and Hulk ArtFX+ statues from Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Batman and Superman statues for BVS will be offered on their own, but can combine to create one bigger piece commemorating the fight between man and "god." Fantastic Five: Best Marvel Wonder Women

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our years on the Internet, it’s that there’s no aspect of comics that can’t be broken down and quantified in a single definitive list, preferably in amounts of five or ten. And since there’s no more definitive authority than ComicsAlliance, we’re taking it upon ourselves to compile Top Five lists of everything you could ever want to know about comics. They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and as some of our earlier episodes have shown, Marvel isn’t afraid to compliment their Distinguished Competition by homaging, or straight up copying, some of DC’s most popular characters. Since her introduction in 1942, Princess Diana, better known as Wonder Woman, has become without question the most well-known and influential superheroine in the world. We already showed you some of the best analogues Marvel made for the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight, and now it’s time to round out DC’s Trinity with the Amazing Amazon! Continue reading…

Funko's DC Comics Subscription Service, Legion of Collectors, Coming in March

If you were wondering why there wasn't an armored Batman in Funko's recent deluge of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice collectibles, today we got the answer. Though it's been in the works for some time, Funko has only just now unveiled its DC Comics subscription service, Legion of Collectors. The very first exclusive figure included will be the armored Batman from the upcoming Warner Bros. feature film, which makes perfect sense given that the bi-monthly box will launch in March alongside that movie he stole from Superman. The Legion of Collectors borrows a bit of its name from DC's spacefaring superteam of the future, but considering the Legion's presence in the current DC catalog, it's unlikely we'll see a Matter-Eater Lad or Saturn Girl Pop figure any time soon. This is the third subscription service from Funko launched in the last year or so, with Marvel and Star Wars leading the charge into Funko's direct-to-consumer sales. Like those other two subscriptions, everything included will be 100% exclusive. It also gives people who've subscribed to all three a new box of Funko goods every month of the year. You Can Now Publish Your Own 'Dungeons & Dragons' Adventures Through The DungeonMaster's Guild

Dungeons & Dragons has been the world's most popular roleplaying game for over forty years now, and yet, in all that time, there has never been an officially published adventure featuring an entire dungeon made of Gelatinous Cubes. It's unbelievable, I know --- they are literally cubes, you could easily use them as building blocks to create an entire underground complex that was itself a shimmering, jiggling, nearly invisible acidic nightmare, and it's never happened. But now, at long last, it can. While DungeonMasters have been writing their own adventures for as long as there have been adventures to write, this week saw the launch of the Dungeon Master's Guild, a new program that will allow anyone to publish their adventures through official channels. And what's more, you can actually do it using Wizards of the Coast's Forgotten Realms setting. Continue reading…

Did you miss out on the DC Collectibles Batman: The Animated Series Batmobile when it released last fall? Perhaps you didn't have enough money at the time. Or by chance you've just been waiting for it to be repackaged in a deluxe edition with a new paint job and a few figures to make it an even more special collectible. Whatever mysterious circumstances kept you from adding the killer collectible to your collection, know now that you'll have another chance later this summer. 2000 AD Launches Fan Petition For A 'Dredd' TV Show

I'm not too proud to admit that I can occasionally be taken in pretty easily by a hoax, and that's exactly what happened last week. For whatever reason, an old April Fool's Day post about Netflix picking up a 13-episode series set in the world of 2012's Dredd, with Karl Urban returning as John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's stone-faced lawman of the future, started making the rounds again, and I bought it hook, line and sinker. In my defense, though, it was less because of the content of the fake announcement and more because it's something that I not only want to happen, but that seems like it very easily could happen. I mean, if Netflix can do Richie Rich, then surely to grud it can do Dredd, right? Well, it seems that I'm not the only one who feels that way. Today, the longstanding campaign to get a sequel to Dredd in film has been modified, calling instead for a more serialized version, and it's being promoted by 2000 AD. Continue reading…

On The Cheap: The Latest Humble Bundle Features 'Kaptara,' 'Bitch Planet' And More To Benefit The Human Rights Campaign

I've been keeping my eye on the Humble Bundle for a long time now to find good deals on cheap comics, and one of the things that still surprises me every time there's a new one is that there's always something brand new in there. Take, for instance, the current bundle, which focuses on creator-owned comics from Image. Not only does it have Image mainstays like Invincible, Phonogram, and Saga, but it also includes the first volume of Chip Zdarsky and Kagan McLeod's Kaptara, collecting the first five issues of the series. Folks. Kaptara vol. 1 came out less than a month ago. #6 isn't even out yet. So on the off chance that you need an economic justification to get a whole bunch of comic books and support the Human Rights Campaign, just imagine that you're paying full price for Kaptara, Bitch Planet, and Just The Tips, and getting 47 issues of Invincible for free. 'Batman v Superman' Director Zack Snyder Says 'Justice League' Will Explore Doomsday's Mythology

The biggest thing — literally and figuratively — to come out of the most recent trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was Doomsday, the classic mutant baddie who appears in a massive battle against Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman near the trailer’s end. Many fans were confused as to why Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. would reveal Doomsday so soon, but the director says he has a good reason for offering the character up this early in the marketing cycle and teases a bigger connection to the Justice League franchise.

'Civil War' Directors Joe and Anthony Russo Also Think Black Widow Should Have a Solo Movie

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is one of the most interesting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly given her incredibly intriguing back story briefly explored in Avengers: Age of Ultron. United Underworld: Who Is Batman 66's Greatest Arch-Villain? [Poll]

50 years ago today, the classic Batman TV series premiered, kicking off a three-year run as one of the greatest adaptations of comic books ever made --- and while Adam West and Burt Ward's earnest, stentorian heroes were the stars, I think it's fair to say that the real attractions came from the villains. The bizarre heists, the deathtraps, the colorful costumes and scenery-chewing monologues made them favorites not just for the fans, but for the actors lining up to take roles on a pop culture phenomenon. But as is so often the case when we start talking about a fantastic roster of characters, it inevitably leads to the question of just who was the best. Was it Julie Newmar's purr-fect Catwoman? Frank Gorshin's surprisingly intense riddler? Victor Buono's King Tut? Heck maybe it was even a long-shot candidate like Bookworm! It's too hard to pick, which is why we're leaving it up to you. Check out the villains and vote below to crown the true King or Queen of Crime! Continue reading…

What A Girl Wants: Should You Be Reading 'Momokuri'?

When you look at the sheer range and number of original stories being told in comics form today, it’s hard to imagine a better time to be a comics reader. With Should I Be Reading… ?, ComicsAlliance hopes to offer you a guide to some of the best original ongoing comics being published today. There are a lot of easily-available manga about boys lusting after girls, so it's a blessed relief to find a translated import that centers a teenage dating story on the desire a girl has for a boy. It's reciprocal! But Momokuri lives and dies on its evocation of fifteen year old Kurihara's pre-sexual desire for Momotsuki. These kids are too shy to hold hands or get close enough to take a selfie; the point is, that doesn't negate any of their, or her, yearning. Continue reading…

The Spectacular Spider-Man is Out and About as Marvel Select's Next Figure

If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that there's no such thing as too many Spider-Mans. Hell, Marvel had a huge crossover with a bunch of alternate worlds and their respective Spider-Men, and some of those folks are still kicking around in various forms even though Spider-Verse ended like a decade ago. Well that's how long ago it feels since Marvel's rebooted like three times since the Spider-Verse closed its doors. Even with all those other webslingers running around, whether its Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, (formerly Ultimate) Spider-Man, Spidey, Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, fans have always had a spot in their hearts for the original recipe Spider-Man. Peter Parker has had a long history, and as such he's built up a tremendous following over decades of existence as the flagship character of the Marvel Universe. That's why it's not all that surprising to see that once again, Spider-Man will be getting his twelfth Marvel Select figure next month. Continue reading…

Sideshow's Captain Marvel Statue Stands Ready to Save the Galaxy

Carol Danvers is poised to have a big year. Captain Marvel might not be getting a movie in 2016 like so many of her Marvel counterparts, but she's got a great ongoing series and will play a major role in the upcoming Civil War II comic event. While she's had a few action figures over the course of the last year, the Avenger hasn't gotten the high gloss treatment befitting the hero that defends Earth and space. I don't know you if you know this, but space, it's infinite. Takes a special kind of person to say, "We must protect this house!" when that house is as vast and wide as every galaxy in the known universe. This year, Sideshow is giving the Captain her due with a new premium format figure. She might look a little different than you're used to seeing though. The statue puts her recently tweaked costume through a few more alterations, adding a bit more star flare and giving that sash an interesting new direction. She's still got that bad-ass attitude and some on-point eyeliner though. Seriously, Carol looks more than ready to take on the world, she looks ready to take on the universe. Which, as I said before, is a good thing because the universe is magnificent and cold and needs someone like Captain Marvel to keep it together. Continue reading…

'Batman v Superman' Almost Cast Jesse Eisenberg in a Different Role

It’s time to play the speculation game. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder and star Jesse Eisenberg recently sat down for an interview where they coyly revealed that the actor was almost cast in a different role in the film before he signed on to play Lex Luthor. And while they won’t tell us who Eisenberg almost played, they do offer a few more tidbits about his actual role in the film and tease a rather exciting sequence involving his hair.

'Doctor Mirage: Second Lives' #2: Ghosts, Sex Cults, and Gorgeous Covers [Preview]

January 13 sees the release of the second issue of Valiant's The Death Defying Doctor Mirage: Second Lives #2, written by Jen Van Meter with art by Roberto de la Torre. The comic joins Dr. Shan Mirage and her immaterial ghost husband, Hwen, as they and their allies begin a ritual to unlock the secret of a magical scroll. What they find inside is an old-school Hollywood creep, who will no doubt be causing further trouble for the Doctor and her friends.

Once again this series sports particularly striking covers, including a great Emi Lenox variant, and one of my favorite Kevin Wada covers ever.

Everyone Be Very Quiet: 'Achewood' Has Returned Three Weeks In A Row And We Don't Want To Scare It Off

If you've been reading ComicsAlliance for a while, then you already know that I'm a huge fan of Chris Onstad's Achewood, and if you've been reading Achewood for a while, you'll know that we spent 2015 wandering in a hellish desert, far from the sight of new comics. The last strip ran on April 7, 2014, and for a long time, I think we all thought that the formerly two-fisted Ramses Luther Smuckles learning to manage his anger would be the final installment that we'd ever see. Then, one year, eight months, and 17 days later, a new (and very NSFW) strip appeared on December 24, and while I honestly thought that was evidence of a genuine Christmas Miracle, there's been a new strip every Friday for the past three weeks. And we all need to be extremely careful about it so that we don't scare it off. Continue reading…

Who Ya Gonna Find on Toy Shelves? The New Ghostbusters

Unless you stockpiled up on Real Ghostbusters toys back in the '80s when the cartoon first ran, it's been a challenge to lock down Ghostbuster toys. Mattel's efforts to celebrate the 30th anniversary with a new line was a great idea in theory, but the execution was supremely lacking. It was impossible to find most of the figures made available, and Mattel's subscription service to get the figures out wasn't exactly met with open arms by the masses. Other companies have jumped in to the fill the void for the classic film, but there was reason to be concerned about Mattel's plans for the all-female Ghostbusters reboot/remake arriving later this year. That's why it came as such a surprise when director Paul Feig intimated there would indeed be action figures coming. It was even more of a surprise when he dropped the first picture of the four leading ladies rocking proton packs this week on Twitter. At a time when there's a bit of unease between consumers and manufacturers over the way female figures are made available and sold at retail, seeing this kind of support for Ghostbusters months in advance of the film's release bodes well. That is, if Mattel can actually deliver consistently this time around. Continue reading…

2000 AD To Publish Moore, Wagner And Heinzl's 'Monster' For The First Time In 30 Years

With a creator as widely read, celebrated, and analyzed as Alan Moore, it's pretty easy to think that you could go out and get everything he's ever written. I mean, you can find the big stuff like Watchmen or V For Vendetta just wandering around airports, and even older, more obscure titles like Halo Jones or DR And Quinch aren't that hard to track down. Heck, you can even get CDs of that dude singing his poetry if that's what you're into, and I know that because I've bought them. But there's one title that has managed to elude all but the most die-hard completists for the past three decades: Monster, a horror comic by Moore and artist Heinzl that ran in the British comic Scream in the mid '80s. But now, 2000 AD is collecting the entire series in a 190-page paperback, set for release in July. Continue reading…

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Get Bigger and Badder With ThreeZero and Kevin Eastman

Last summer, ThreeZero and Kevin Eastman unveiled a collaboration to create new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures. In the months since, a number of TMNT developments have gone down, including a crossover with Batman, Mondo's figures all becoming available, a new movie trailer (and figure line), and some potential video game leakage happening, too. But there's been radio silence from ThreeZero about the state of its planned collaboration with one of the Turtles' founding fathers. This week, a new issue of Clutter (a niche toy/collectible magazine) broke that silence. In a new interview with Eastman and ThreeZero's founder/owner Kim Fung Wong, Clutter was able to share some of Eastman's concept art and give us our first look at the painted prototypes. While we've had a lot of different Turtle toys over the years, seeing how Eastman would interpret the characters today gives us a perspective on the characters we'd otherwise never have, even if they only will exist as toys. Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta's "The Vision" #3 is "brilliant in how well it still fits in with... the rest of Marvel's comics."

Ask Chris #282: Time To Get Ill, Or What To Read When You're Stuck In Bed

Q: What comics would you recommend for someone recovering from surgery? Hoping for something fun, easy, pretty episodic. -- @raebeta A: I'm lucky enough that I've never had to go through an extended recovery from surgery, but I have spent plenty sick days in bed from the usual cold and flu, so I know exactly the kind of thing you're getting at. The thing is, while I always go into a bit of bed rest thinking that I'll use that time to catch up on reading, it never really works out that way. Then again, that might be because every time I get so much as a mild sniffle, I want to roll myself up into a blanket like a burrito and play Super Mario Bros. 3 until I feel better, a process that's been going on ever since that time I had a sore throat in 1990. For the record, this is the most effective medical treatment that science has devised, and I'd recommend it over chicken soup nine times out of ten. Continue reading…
