DC Signs Robson Rocha and Otto Schmidt to Exclusive Deals

DC Entertainment has just signed international artists Robson Rocha and Otto Schmidt to exclusive deals with the Burbank company's DC and Vertigo Imprints, expanding its roster of non-North American talent.

Brazillian Robson Rocha worked on a number of New 52 titles, including “Birds of Prey,” “Superboy” and “Batman/Superman” as a penciller, inker and cover artist. He's currently joining forces with writer Sam Humphries on the cosmic adventures of the “Green Lanterns.”

“I've been a fan of comic books since I was a child,” Rocha said in an official statement. “To have the opportunity to work with the DC characters I admire and love so much is a dream come true. These heroes have helped me believe in a better and much more fantastic world. I hope that my contributions to these characters will help to inspire others.”

DC co-publisher and artist Jim Lee praised Robson's style and highlighted the company's commitment to diversity in its characters and creators: “Robson's treatment of both new Lanterns – Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz – is dynamic and light, showing energy and movement in every panel. Having Robson join our ranks is a win for DC.”

Siberian-born Otto Schmidt now resides on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and is currently doing all cover and interior work - including pencils, inks and colors - on “Green Arrow,” written by Benjamin Percy. Fans were quick to embrace the duo's take on the Emerald Archer, and the rekindling of his pre-“Flashpoint” romance with Black Canary, resulting in three printings of “Green Arrow: Rebirth #1.”

“Working with DC on 'Green Arrow' this year has been a pleasure,” said Schmidt. “The fan reaction has been wonderful and I'm excited to show readers even more of what they love. This is a politically and culturally relevant series, but it should also be sexy and fun to read. That's my goal with every page I turn in. How could I not say 'yes' to drawing more Green Arrow and Black Canary for their fans?”

DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras was enthusiastic about Schmidt's talent and his contribution to increased sales. “His sequential artwork is beautiful and brings a unique look to an incredible series, and issues are flying off the shelves.” He added, “DC is excited that Otto is calling DC his home, and his art will be on our covers and inside our comics for some time to come.”

These latest signings come on the heels of a series of recent additions to DC's roster of talent, including artists Liam Sharp and Andy Kubert, and writers Dan Abnett and Amanda Conner.

Fan-Made Plastic Man Comic Celebrates Character's 75th Anniversary

While longtime readers of Plastic Man may be disappointed that the character isn't getting much recognition from DC Comics for his 75th anniversary - at least to the extent of characters like Batman or Wonder Woman - there's still a fan base that's quite eager to honor the classic hero's impact on comics. Two of those fans have even created their own homage to Plas in an all-new web comic that honors the character in a modern-day tale.

RELATED: Oliver Promises “Kick-Ass” Action in “Convergence: Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters”

The comic, created by Justin Smith and Chris Balcom, is a 'day in the life' story of the hero and his trusty (if slightly unhinged) sidekick, Woozy Winks. The comic sees a disillusioned Plastic Man who, tired of playing the Hollywood version of Batman, returns to detective work. In classic Plastic Man style, our malleable hero stumbles upon the hideout and secret identity of a classic DCU villain whilst dropping gags and innuendoes along the way. Smith manages to accurately capture the dialogue of the character, while Balcom's art is wacky enough to give the comic a traditional, professional touch.

RELATED: DC Nation Debuts New Plastic Man Short, “Beware the Batman,” “Teen Titans Go!” Clips

Having first appeared in “Police Comics” (owned by Quality Comics) in 1941, Plastic Man was created, written and drawn by comics giant Jack Cole. Cole was one of the Golden Age workhorses, known for swapping the American Can factory for the 'assembly line' working conditions of the comic book 'sweatshops' of the day, never letting up on his commitment to quality. The iconic, lightning-paced art of the original series led revered comics creator Art Spiegelman to say that “[“Plastic Man”] literally embodied the comic book form.”

Although he has continued to appear in the mainstream DCU over the years, with Grant Morrison even using him as a mainstay in the JLA during his run, Plastic Man hasn't achieved the fame that might be expected from such a popular character in comic book reader circles.

In Smith and Balcom's work, Plas is asked, “Are they ever going to make a movie about you?” to which he replies, “Probably not. I used to think that was important” - a line that one might find in a Plastic Man Appreciation Group.

While Plas hasn't had much to do in comics lately, things are looking better for the character on the small screen. New promo art for “Justice League Action”, in addition to the trailer, reveal that Plastic Man will be a part of the upcoming animated series' cast. Perhaps we shouldn't lose hope for a Hollywood adaptation of Plastic Man yet…

Take a look at the web comic below:

No further information about “MU” has been revealed, although the date on all three images teases the arrival of more info on September 1.

'Gotham' Goes Mad in New Season 3 Trailer

Gotham Season 3 will be laying the Alice in Wonderland puns pretty thick by the arrival of the Mad Hatter, so we'd best get used to it now. “Walking Dead” Showrunner Defends Season 6's Ambiguous Cliffhanger

Warning: Major spoilers follow for the Season 6 finale of “The Walking Dead.”

“The Walking Dead” showrunner Scott M. Gimple now admits that he knew a lot of fans would be angry over “Last Day On Earth,” the Season 6 finale where, after a whole lot of buildup, the writers chose not to reveal the identity of Negan's victim at the hands of his barbed baseball bat, Lucille.

RELATED: Kirkman's Plan for the Conclusion of “The Walking Dead” Has Changed

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gimple promises that fans will be rewarded for the long wait, ensuring that the cliffhanger wasn't created just to piss them off.

On the contrary, Gimple said, “[W]e wanted to give them a new experience, and to give them an experience of suspense and fear, because they don't know what's going to happen. What's actually happening on the show to characters, we want them to feel it. We want them to be surprised.”

Gimple goes on to illustrate how Negan's introduction is much different from the dumpster incident from two seasons ago, where the series made it look like Glenn was getting disemboweled by walkers, even though he wasn't.

“I think in the overarching tapestry of what the show is, these are individual stories that aren't particularly related. I suppose they do both have to do with loss. But I think it is, in some ways, the opposite. The dumpster story was somebody surviving something. It was about a character getting to live. It was really to put the audience in the place of the people in Alexandria. We didn't get to know what happened. It looked like he died but it wasn't unlocked, it wasn't a certainty. But the thing that allowed him to survive was the thing that made it look like he died, which was Nicholas' guts. So, hopefully that story was like, 'Oh, somebody survived! I went through this horrible thing where, oh my god, this character just died, and they survived.'”

Olympian Ryan Lochte is 110% Onboard for Wizard World Richmond

Ryan Lochte, disgraced six-time gold medal-winning Olympic swimmer, will attend Wizard World Richmond as a featured guest. Aside from his impressive record as an Olympic swimmer, Lochte is known for his cameos on “30 Rock,” “Beverly Hills 90210” and as a reality star on the E! network television show “What Would Lochte Do?” Lately, the swimmer has been embroiled in an international scandal.

On August 14, 2016 Lochte claimed he and three other teammates had been robbed at gunpoint when a group of men posing as police stopped their taxi and demanded money and personal belongings. Later reports revealed a very different picture, in which Lochte and his teammates were confronted by security guards at a gas station after vandalizing the establishment.

Lochte was ordered to pay $11,000 to a Brazilian charity and has issued numerous apologies to the people of Rio de Janeiro, the police involved, the Olympic committee and the gas station owner.

“I just want to say I am truly, 110% sorry,” said Lochte in an interview with the Brazilian news outlet Globo.

Despite the controversy, Lochte will attend Wizard World Richmond as a featured guest alongside the likes of William Shatner, “Star Trek” actor; Matt Smith, former “Doctor Who” lead; Dean Ambrose, WWE wrestler; and Jewel Staite, “Firefly” actress. Attendees can purchase photo ops and autographs on top of the convention admission price. A photo with Ryan Lochte costs $50, but an autograph is free.

Gotham's Bruce Wayne Will Face His Double in Season 3

Things are not what they seem in Fox's “Gotham.” Season Two ended with a truckload of monstrous Indian Hill science experiments spilling out into Gotham City's general population, not least of which being Bruce Wayne's doppelganger. Now, word has come down that the Batman-in-training will meet said doppelganger, and that's where things get interesting.

Actor ComicBook.com. The two characters are only similar in appearance - despite being played by the same actor.

“Everything else about them, they think differently, they talk differently, they walk differently, they communicate differently,” said Mazouz. “He's pretty weird, the other guy.”

And lest you think Bruce and his double will operate separately throughout the season, Mazouz was quick to point out they'll share plenty of screen time. “I played both roles against myself more than once, and it was weird, really weird,” said the actor. “You'll see!”

The third season of Gotham will also introduce the recast and aged up Poison Ivy, with Maggie Geha taking over for Clare Foley, and the potential for Bruce's relationship with future-Catwoman Selina Kyle to get kicked up a notch. Meanwhile, the Court of Owls will play a major role in the upcoming season, along with new villains like the Mad Hatter and the Tweedle brothers.

“Gotham” returns to Fox for its third season on September 19, 2016.

Spider-Gwen Swings into Marvel's Animated “Ultimate Spider-Man”

Everyone's favorite alternate universe lady web-slinger is set to take Marvel's animated “Ultimate Spider-Man” by storm. Spider-Gwen will make her animated debut in the four-part storyline “Return to the Spider-Verse,” in which Spider-Man and Miles Morales will visit several of Marvel's storied alternate realities and meet their many, varied Spider-persons.

Each season of Marvel's “Ultimate Spider-Man” takes on a new subtitle, with the current fourth season dubbed “Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six.” The forthcoming storyline is meant to cap off the season with a big bang, introducing new setting and characters, of which Spider-Gwen is just one, according to a report on IGN.

Other alternate universe Spideys set to appear in the arc include Blood Spider, Wolf Spider, Web Beard, Webslinger and Spider Cowboy.

Created by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez in 2014's “Edge of Spider-Verse” #2, Spider-Gwen is a resident of Earth 65, an alternate universe Earth in Marvel canon. In Earth 65's timeline, Gwen Stacey became Spider-Woman after she was bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. Parker eventually became jealous of Stacey's newfound powers and turned himself into an alternate version of the villainous Lizard.

“Ultimate Spider-Man's” season-ending arc, “Return to the Spider-Verse,” premieres August 27, 2016 on Disney XD. Spider-Gwen will make her debut during the arc's fourth installment, airing September 17, 2016.

John Krasinski Blames Chris Hemsworth's Bod of Thunder for His Failed Captain America Audition

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, now in its eighth year, has been known to kickstart a lot of otherwise unknown actors' careers, and give some their big break while rebooting others' careers. While Robert Downey Jr. definitely had the biggest name at the start, it wasn't easy for Jon Favreau to convince the Marvel execs that he was right for Tony Stark, but we're all so glad he did. Chris Evans' only other blockbuster credit was as the Human Torch in Fox's Fantastic Four (2005) and its ill-fated sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), but his chiseled jawline soon landed him the title role in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.

It's Betty And The Waves Vs. The Ronnies In 'Archie' #11 [Preview]

Archie and the gang have always had a pretty interesting relationship to music. I mean, "the kids form a band" is a pretty standard plot for virtually any story about teenage characters, but the Archies have the distinction of actually producing the real-life #1 single of 1969, coming in ahead of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. That kind of accomplishment, even almost 50 years later, is going to shape how those comics work.
So with that in mind, it's always a pretty big deal when Riverdale's favorite teens break out the instruments and start jamming, and in this week's Archie #11, Betty and Veronica are taking their rivalry to a whole new musical level. Check out the formation of the Ronnies and Betty and the Waves in a preview below!

When I was a kid, it seemed like I was always getting dragged into fights with my parents that my younger brother would start. He would say something rude to my parents, things would escalate, and before I knew it, my mom was waving her arms in the air and shouting something about how “you two” were always misbehaving or getting into trouble. Meanwhile, I'm sitting in the corner reading a Star Wars novel and wondering just how the heck I got involved in this fight to begin with.

'Shazam!' Producer Opens Up About Their Film's Fit in the DC Cinematic Universe

It feels a little wrong to just keep talking about upcoming Dwayne Johnson movies as if he isn't at war with Vin Diesel over the future of the Fast and the Furious franchise. What if they never reconcile? What if this is the beef that finally tears the Toretto family apart? Then again, I'd like to think that neither Johnson nor Diesel would want us to put our lives on hold while we're worrying about them. Life must go on, you know?

'Gotham' Says Aged-Up Poison Ivy Won't Have Any Sexuality or Powers

Gotham weirdness aside, it feels like Season 3 straddles a line with the decision to age proto-Poison Ivy character Ivy Pepper from 14 year-old actor Clare Foley into 28 year-old Maggie Geha. Early promotional shots haven't done the spin any favors, but producers and cast argue that Gotham Season 3 won't utilize the Batman character's inherent sexuality, or even her plant-related abilities.

Valiant Comics Joins Quidd App to Offer First Trading Card Set in 20 Years

There comes a time in a comic book company's revival where you can no longer call it a revival and you have to acknowledge that it has finally arrived. There are a number of factors to calculate in such an equation, but things like steady releases of consistent, quality books isn't quite as important to the science of the matter as more tangential ideas like board games, action figures and of course, trading cards.

Faithful readers, thanks to the launch of its own digital trading card series within the Quidd app, today is the day Valiant has made it.

'BIRDS OF PREY' TV REWATCH, EPISODE 6: 'PRIMAL SCREAM'

Shortly after the debut of Smallville, but long before comic book superhero TV shows were as commonplace as they are today, the WB launched a live-action Birds of PreyTV series that lasted just one 13-episode season, and seems little mourned today. In an effort to determine just what went wrong with the seemingly before-its-time show, our Bird Watching team of Meredith Tomeo and Caleb Mozzocco are watching and dissecting every episode. You can watch along with us on DVD or digitally on iTunes or Amazon.

In this episode, the producers do their level best to adapt Point Break with Huntress in the Johnny Utah role. For better or worse, it is neither as awesome nor as spectacularly bad as that sounds. "Primal Scream" originally aired on November 13 of 2002, and was written by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Adam Armus and Kay Foster, and directed by Jim Charleston.

The Replacements: Odinson And The Legacy Of Thor

Since the dawn of the Silver Age, legacy characters have been a staple of superhero fiction, and having a new character step into a well loved role can open up new opportunities for writers and artists to tell different kinds of stories. In The Replacements, we'll look back at the notable and not-so-notable heroes and villains to assume some of the most iconic mantles in the superhero genre.

The Mighty Thor is a hero as old as time and a founding Avenger, but The Prince of Asgard is not the only person to bear that moniker. Over time there have been other heroes and villains who have attempted to claim the name of Thor, and not all of them were considered worthy.

They're great, and some of the most fun I've had playing them has been with the ones that are based on superheroes. The only problem is that none of those games feature Ninjak.

KC Green Launches Kickstarter For 'This Is Fine' Plush Doll

If you're on the internet, there's no doubt you've seen KC Green's instantly memetic cartoon strip where a dog in a bowler hat sips coffee as his kitchen burns down around him. As the flames lap at his feet, he utters only three words; "This is fine." The two panels from a longer strip have been shared likely millions of times at this point, often without attribution to Green or his webcomic Gunshow, but as of late there's been a renewed push for recognition.
Green has launched a Kickstarter for a plush doll of the "This is fine" dog, which comes complete with a hat, coffee mug, and that trademark blank stare that we all know and love (and feel, deep in our souls). KC Green has also debuted a sequel to the original strip, addressing the current state of global affairs.
