Nicolas Winding Refn Would Love to Direct a 'Batgirl' Movie
We often take it for granted that our most idiosyncratic artists want no part of the commercial side of Hollywood, but every now and then, someone comes along and changes our minds. Sometimes a filmmaker grew up on the same commercial movies that we all used to love; sometimes they just want to try their hand at working with big casts and even bigger budgets. And sometimes, they just think it would be a blast.

The Case for Paradise Island As Lesbian Utopia [Pride Week]
And when I talk about the Amazons, I'm talking about the ones in Wonder Woman comics, as originally introduced in 1941 by H.G. Peter, William Moulton Marston, and Marston's partners and uncredited collaborators, Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne. The idea that Greek Myth and ancient writings are good sources for what DC's Amazons should be like didn't really take hold until Brian Azzarello's run, and it didn't serve them very well.

'Doctor Strange' Toys Reveal Identity of Mads Mikkelsen's Villain
The identity of Mads Mikkelsen's mysterious villain in Doctor Strange has been the subject of much speculation, with fans assuming the former Hannibal star is either playing classic comic baddies like Dormammu or Nightmare. Those would be good guesses, but they're both incorrect - it turns out Mikkelsen is playing an antagonist most people have never even heard of before, but one that might make for a much more interesting story.

This Is Not A Drill: Wild Dog Is Going To Be On 'Arrow' Next Season
I honestly thought we were past the point where superhero TV and movies could surprise me anymore. I mean, we're two years out from a movie where a Celestial showed up on screen and an Academy Award-nominated actor talked about the Nova Corps, and last year's TV season brought us Gorilla Grodd as a full-on telepathic talking super-gorilla who fought the Flash and an entire show about the Atom, Captain Cold and Hawkgirl flying through the time stream to fight Vandal Savage. We are, I thought, long past the point where just telling me a character's going to show up on a TV show is worth getting excited about.
And then the CW announced that Wild Dog was going to be on Arrow.

Kawahara And Aruko's 'My Love Story!!' To End In July With 100-Page Final Chapter
It's a story built on the kind of comedy that you can only get from intense love and heartbreaking misunderstandings, and it's been one of my favorite comics on the stands ever since I read the first volume. But now, it seems that Kawahara and Aruko are bringing the story to a close. The final chapter is set to run in the July 13 issues of Bessatsu Margaret --- and they're going out with an extra long installment that's set to run for 100 pages.

He Slices, He Dices, and Now Thanks to NECA, Deadpool Comes in 18-Inch Sizes
NECA's made a smidgen of Marvel figures before, all in quarter-scale size as the license permits, but they've all been tied to the movie versions of the Avengers. Deadpool will be the company's first Marvel figure based on his comic interpretation, and actually NECA's first comic book-based figure from either the Marvel or DC lines. Anyone that's been collecting NECA's 1/4 scale figures knows the kind of detail they bring to the table, but if this is a glimpse of the potential to come from other comic-based figures, the competition just got real quiet.

Warner Bros. Let James Wan Pick Between Directing 'Aquaman' and 'The Flash'
It was big news last week when Dope director Rick Famuyiwa was tapped to make the big-screen adaptation of DC Comics' The Flash. Famuyiwa replaced Seth Grahame-Smith, who was originally supposed to make his directorial debut on the project, but later dropped out over “creative differences” with Warner Bros. But this whole scenario may not have played out if not for a decision made by a third filmmaker a few years ago.

The Legend has Come True: Celebrating The First Appearance of Thor
On June 5, 1962, with a crack of thunder, a new hero burst on the scene. Well, not a new hero exactly. A very, very old hero who'd been reimagined for a modern world. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby at the height of their (dubiously balanced) creative powers, with scripting help from Stan's brother Larry Lieber, took a millennia-old Norse god and made him into a superhero in Journey into Mystery #83, the debut of the Mighty Thor.

Coins on gravestones have particular meanings
These coins, left by earlier people to the grave, have distinctive meanings when left on the gravestone of someone killed while serving in the military, and those meanings vary based on the coins' denomination.
According to fact-checking website Snopes.com, leaving a coin on a gravestone is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's household that somebody had visited the grave to cover their respects. Leaving a penny means simply that you visited.
Visitors leaving a new nickel indicates that visitors and the deceased experienced training together, while a dime means that visitors served with him in some capacity. By leaving a quarter on the headstone, a visitor is telling the grouped household that they were there when the soldier was killed.
According to tradition, national cemeteries and veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, with the funds used to keep the cemetery or even to pay burial charges for homeless veterans.
In the usa, this exercise allegedly became common during the Vietnam War because of the political divide in the united kingdom during the war, Snopes reports. It had been a way to show respect without getting into an uncomfortable discussion concerning the war with the soldier's family.
Listed by Snopes because “legend,” the website struggles to verify that the tradition actually goes back to Vietnam; the earliest reference to the practice dates to a website post in June 2009, it reports.
