'Wonder Woman' Set Photos Take Gal Gadot and Chris Pine Back in Time

As has been heavily rumored since last year, we know that at least part of the Wonder Woman solo film will take place during World War I, a fact supported by the first set photo of Chris Pine and co-star Said Taghmaoui, and reiterated by the latest batch of images from the set of the highly-anticipated solo superhero outing. The new photos reveal what Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince looks like in WWI-era civilian clothing and give us another look at Pine.

Ask Chris #278: Meet DC's Answer to Jessica Jones

Q: Who is the closest DC equivalent to Jessica Jones? -- @charlotteofoz

A: For what I suspect is a pretty obvious reason, this is a question that seems to be going around a lot this week, and it's an interesting one. As much as DC has experimented with it, the publisher has never had a lot of lasting success with street-level looks at how its universe functions. And really, that makes sense when you consider that its most famously gritty urban vigilante is also a billionaire who drives around in a rocket car and hangs out with his friends on the moon.

But there is a pretty good answer, and while I can't take the credit for thinking it up myself, it's definitely one that I agree with. If you're looking for a character to fill that role in the DC Universe, then you're looking for Cameron Chase --- and not just because they both have those alliterative initials.

ICYMI: We Found Out What the #LipstickIncident Was In 'Archie' #4

Since the first issue of the new Archie comic, one of the driving forces behind the plot was the recent breakup between Archie Andrews and Betty Cooper, paving the way for Veronica Lodge to wrap Archie around her finger like a freckled piece of string. The impetus behind the breakup was "the lipstick incident," which was describned specifically as Archie not cheating on Betty – leaving everyone to ask, "what exactly happened?" Archie #4, by Mark Waid and Annie Wu, answers the question. Continue reading…

Ponies Are Reindeer In The 'My Little Pony Holiday Special' And What's Even Real Anymore? [Preview]

Remember Christmas Comes to Pac-Land, the 1982 special where Santa Claus crash-lands on Pac-Man's front yard? If you don't, that's okay, but its worth noting that the entire plot revolves around Santa Claus having to explain Christmas to the weird little dot-eating hockey puck, implying that Pac-Land, despite having firm evidence of an afterlife, exists outside the sight of God. Trust me, it's as weird as it sounds. I bring all this up because it was a bizarre problem that My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic sidestepped by introducing their own gift-giving winter holiday, Hearth's Warming Eve, so that they could have all the fun of a Christmas story without having to include, say, Pony Jesus. But as Katie Cook takes the stage for this year's My Little Pony Holiday Special, it ends up raising a whole lot of other questions, like why Rainbow Dash is suddenly a reindeer. Check out a preview below and see if you can figure it out for yourself! Continue reading…

The Joker's Surprise Appearance At The 1989 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Is A True Act Of Supervillainy [Video]

It's Thanksgiving here in America, which means that the streets of New York City are being overtaken by the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! It's a pretty big deal for those of us who enjoy ushering in the holiday season with Pikachu, Spider-Man and, of course, Santa Claus himself. In 1989, however, there was another guest who appeared to kick off Christmas: Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker. Continue reading…

Bizarro Back Issues: Batman In The Worst Thanksgiving Ever (1954)

The time is once again here for Thanksgiving in America, and while most of us just use the holiday as an excuse to binge on turkey, there is a deeper meaning behind it. It's the day that we set aside to honor the time that the Native Americans helped out the Pilgrims, who would not have otherwise survived the harsh winter in their new home. Things eventually turned pretty sour between the two groups, but that first Thanksgiving stands as a testament to the power of people helping each other through the rough times. However, Batman apparently never got the memo about brotherhood and equality, which is why a 1954 story in Detective Comics #205 found the Dark Knight traveling back in time to drop the hammer on Gotham City's indigenous population in the name of Bat-Imperialism and discovering "The Origin of the Bat-Cave!" It's one of our favorite crazy stories, and we're rerunning this classic Bizarro Back Issues feature this week in honor of the occasion. Continue reading…

Marvel Comics and The Masters of the Universe Ruled The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade So Hard in the '80s [Video]

From Wi-Fi at McDonalds to G.I. Joe action figures with more than 11 points of articulation, 2010 has a lot of things that the '80s sorely lacked. One thing that decade did better, though, was the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It's been a few years since I've woken up before noon to catch it, but if YouTube is to be believed the Masters of the Universe Float from '84 and the Marvel Floats from '87 and '89 alone are proof alone that the parade's floats just ain't what they used to be. See Skeletor whack Orko in the face with his Havoc Staff and the Silver Surfer hold on for dear life in the clips below. Continue reading…

The First Order Makes Problems for the Resistance in Disney Infinity's Latest Trailer

There's been a lot of talk about Star Wars this year, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not going to get any better between now and Dec. 18. Actually, I don't think it's bad news at all, but that's because I'm clinging to the hype train with all my strength, hoping just to make it through the next few weeks without falling off. One of my coping mechanisms for not having The Force Awakens beamed directly into my brain has been playing Disney Infinity's Star Wars content with my wife. Soon, we'll have even more Drunk History versions of Star Wars' narratives when Disney Infinity's The Force Awakens play set arrives. The existing Star Wars content for Disney Infinity has been decent, giving me the ability to play as my favorite characters from the prequel and original trilogies, as well as Rebels, but the stories have been seriously wacky. Maybe not the Clone Wars/Rebels era stuff, but the Rise Against the Empire play set has a narrative that's eerily reminiscent of a child who's only seen Star Wars once trying to explain the whole story while her parents capture the moment on a cell phone. It's silly fun, and makes the experience feel fresh, even if you are laughing the whole time at the inaccuracies from the original story. I'm getting that same vibe about The Force Awakens from this trailer. Continue reading…

'Silk' #1 Remembers The Past While Looking Towards The Future [Review]

Silk, the wall-crawling hero with slightly less baggage than the other spider-people in the Marvel Universe, gets a new #1 this week in the relaunch (that's really a continutation) of her solo series. It's a first issue that finds its strongest and weakest moments in how it handles the status quo.

Marvel has done a great job in recent years of finding excellent artists whose styles wouldn't normally fit in a Big Two superhero book, and Stacey Lee's art on Silk is no exception. Her art has a gentle roundness to it, with a natural sense of animation, and strong character designs. Lee stuffs her panels with character details that round out the characters presented without needlessly distracting the eye.

Even though we've got a Justice League movie in development and Suicide Squad on the way next summer, it looks like DC and Warner Bros. aren't quite done bringing their teams to the big screen just yet. As you might have heard, Justice League Dark is back in development, a bit of news that sent excited superhero fans all over the world eagerly asking, "Wait, what the heck is Justice League Dark?" The basic idea is that they're a team of mystical heroes, so named because they fight against the darker magical threats to the DC Universe (and because we all agreed Justice League With Almonds was just a bit ridiculous), but if you need more information, look no further. We have your back with a breakdown of the characters you're likely to meet if Justice League Dark ever makes it to the big screen! Continue reading…

Super: The Gayest 'Stucky' Moments in the 'Captain America: Civil War' Trailer

The first trailer for Marvel's Captain America: Civil War dropped late last night, and it riled up all the feels that Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are used to; the thrill of seeing a new character in action (hey, it's Black Panther, finally!); the wonder at the awe-inspiring action and athelticism (Steve doing helicopter stretches!); the worry about how Black Widow's wig will look this time (pretty good). But this trailer --- and this movie --- brings extra feels, because it's the third and possibly final chapter in the MCU's greatest romance; the ballad of Bucky and Steve. If you came to this trailer hoping for some lingering glances and barely concealed intimations of love, you weren't going to leave disappointed. Let's review the gayest Stucky moments (that's Steve/Bucky) in the Civil War trailer. Continue reading…

A Nerd and Her Dinosaur: Moon Girl is the Hero We Need [Review]

The first issue of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a perfect introduction to Moon Girl, whose given name is Lunella Lafayette. Lunella is a nerd. Like, a big nerd. She’s the sort of kid who hates school because it doesn’t challenge her, and the other kids make fun of her for knowing so much. She’s the sort of kid who wears a T-shirt with a realistic picture of the moon on it (which is also a nice meta-joke about the idea of “Moon Girl” as a conventional superhero identity). Basically, Moon Girl is exactly the sort of kid who reads comics. Or at least, she’s the sort of kid who reads comics if kids still read comics. And Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is the sort of comic (along with books like Squirrel Girl and Lumberjanes) that gives me hope that kids reading comics might still be a thing, or could become a thing again. At least there are comics we can feel good about handing them to keep that hope alive. Continue reading…

Keep An Eye Out For 'Ghostbusters Annnual 2015′, Literally [Preview]

On The Cheap: Dark Horse's Black Friday Sale Hits Early With 99-Cent Comics

I'm the kind of person who starts celebrating Christmas as soon as the clock hits midnight at the end of Halloween, but even I think it's weird that Black Friday has apparently extended to cover an entire week. Still, I'm not the kind of person to look a gift reindeer in the mouth, especially when it comes with some pretty solid deals on great comics that you can read on the way to grandmas or pop open whenever tomorrow's dinner conversation inevitably turns to politics. Case in point: Dark Horse has launched its digital Black Friday sale a few days early, dropping the price of every single issue to a slim $0.99 across all of its digital outlets. And obviously, we've got some recommendations. Continue reading…

Raise the Roof: Medicom's Doing 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice' Figures

If you're a fan of Medicom's MAFEX line, you know it's been doing some good things with the DC Cinematic Universe license. Well, at least as far as Batman is concerned. We've gotten a few different Christian Bale Batman figures, as well as a handful of Heath Ledger Jokers and a lone Anne Hathaway Catwoman to round out the group. The DC portion of MAFEX line will continue in 2016 with the just-announced Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice series, which brings the new, dour incarnation of the Dark Knight to life alongside his Krytponian nemesis, Party Time Superman. Seriously, have you seen the Man of Steel Superman this excited before? He can barely contain the joy of becoming a highly-articulated import figure. More importantly, this is exactly the kind of thing you expect a farmboy with such a wholesome attitude (and who probably calls soda "pop") to do in a situation where he's supposed to be happy. You could easily argue that Superman is meant to be showing off his strength in that picture, but the only thing he's raising above his head is the roof. Continue reading…

Hasbro Sent Us a Big Box of Star Wars Toys to Convince Us to Join the Dark Side

Since launching a full-on barrage of Star Wars merchandise on Force Friday, Hasbro's had its hands full. As the first new film-based Star Wars toys and collectibles in a decade, anything with The Force Awakens branding on it has been a hot commodity at retail. It's nearly impossible to find all the figures in stock, and what you do find has been picked clean by eager fans and collectors hoping to be among the first to complete the new collection. Sure, there have been a few pieces that linger (mostly Chewbaccas in any size in my part of the country), but for the most part, if you don't have an inside tip at FedEx or UPS, you're often left scrambling in the hopes of getting anything from the latest shipments. Fortunately, being a member of the toy collecting press does come with some perks to help take the pressure off. Back when Force Friday kicked off, Hasbro reached out to a number of outlets and asked editors to pick either Light Side or Dark Side. There was little else in the communique to hint at what we might be making this choice for, but it wasn't a very hard decision to make. Though the good guys are the ones you want to root for in the movies, Star Wars' bad guys have always had some really cool designs, and have typically made more interesting toys. I mean really, which would you rather have, an old man in a brown robe or a bad-ass in green armor with a jet pack? Yeah, that's what I thought. Continue reading…

Ian McGinty Adds A Young Fan To The Cast Of 'Welcome To Showside'

As a kid, there are few things more thrilling than the idea of actually being friends with your favorite comic book characters. I mean, let's be real here, I'm 33 years old and I'm still obsessed with being Batman's best friend, so I can only imagine how exciting it must be to actually have something like that come along. For one young fan, though, there's no imagination necessary. Leaping into Asian Myth with 'Cautionary Fables and Fairy Tales' [Back Pages]

The Cautionary Fables and FairyTales project has been running for several years now; an anthology series that tells stories based around the fairy tales, myths and legends of a different continent each time, starting with Europe, then Africa, and now Asia. The anthology is the work of editors and cartoonists Kel McDonald and Kate Ashwin, and features work from a number of creators both new and established --- including Gene Luen Yang, Meredith McClaren, Nilah Magruder and Carla Speed McNeil.

As with the previous volumes, the team has to Kickstarter to fund the 200-page, black and white Asia anthology. Asia is a particularly wide topic to handle, so ComicsAlliance spoke to both Ashwin and McDonald about how the series has grown over time, what stories will be featured in their latest collection, and how Kickstarter has helped bring the whole thing together.

Meet The Many Jane Mais of Jane Mai's 'See You Next Tuesday'

One of the first pages of cartoonist Jane Mai's See You Next Tuesday is simply a large drawing of the girl on the cover winking, with the words "This is my diary, xoxo Jane Mai" next to it. That certainly seems to suggest that the many short comics, drawings and bursts of hand-written text should be read as autobiographical; as real or true. But that page is followed almost immediately by qualifiers. The first is a hand-written page stating that "The following series of events is not presented chronologically and frankly time does not exist anyway. I'm not even sure I exist TBH." And that is followed by a two-page "people guide" introducing the dramatis personae that star in the book, and... four of the seven are different versions of Jane Mai. Continue reading…

ICYMI: Superman Just Got In A Fistfight With Frankenstein And All Is Right With The World

If you'd asked me back when it was coming out to put a bet on which character from Seven Soldiers would actually go on to become the most prominent of the DC Universe, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have put any money on Frankenstein. Just for the record, I would've backed the Manhattan Guardian all the way to the bank, and yet, here we are, in a DC Universe where Frankenstein is showing up everywhere. It was just last week that he showed up leading the Creature Commandos in a cross-time caper in Justice League United, and this week, he's doing what all great heroes in the DC Universe must do in order to get to that next level of fame: Getting in a fistfight with Superman. And it's awesome. Continue reading…

Ye Gods! A Birthday Tribute to Chester Gould, Creator of 'Dick Tracy'

It's safe to say that cartoonist Chester Gould, born on this day all the way back in 1900, is well known because of one strip: Dick Tracy. Though he did other work over the course of his long career --- much of it about his adopted home city of Chicago --- it's hard to deny that creating arguably the most famous fictional police detective and drawing a comic about him for 46 years is a whole career in itself.

See Megan Gale as George Miller's Wonder Woman That Never Was

Before George Miller re-established his supremacy as action filmmaking’s most insatiably inventive madman with this spring’s Fury Road, he had planned a comeback of a different sort. In the late 2000s, Miller was slated to helm an unprecedentedly ambitious undertaking for DC, an adaptation of the Justice League comics that’d bring together all of the company’s most popular heroes for one grand adventure. He had secured a promising cast — Armie Hammer as Superman, Common as the Green Lantern, Adam Brody as the Flash — for the tentatively titled Justice League Mortal, but relocations in production and the 2008 actors’ strike effectively derailed production on this lost gem. NECA's Life-Size Arkham Knight Batman Will Stand Watch Over Your Loved Ones

There once was a time when I would have thought it completely unbelievable to have Batman watching over my home. First of all, the dude is a fictional character. Secondly, I don't live in Gotham, which is a fictional place. Sure, there are a myriad of collectibles currently available that allow me to put miniature Batmans all over the place, and between you and me, those little guys are in a lot of places in my house. None of those scaled-down figures strike the fear of the night into criminals however. It's a trade-off in being able to afford them and fit them in convenient places like bookshelves.

Now, NECA's announced a life-size Batman based on the Batman: Arkham Knight incarnation, and what it lacks in function it more than makes up for in straight-up awesome.

Ralph McQuarrie's Boba Fett Lives on in New Statue From Sideshow

Boba Fett wasn't always the Mandalorian armor-wearing bad-ass that made it into the final films. Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie originally envisioned Fett as a sort of super-trooper (meow) in the Imperial army. The concept also stemmed a bit from the original ideas for Darth Vader, though we all know how that turned out. The Fett we saw on screen was a further modified version of McQuarrie's concepts that was finished off by Joe Johnston, who was an art director at Lucasfilm at the time. While the white armor even made it so far as to be screentested, the final version deviated from McQuarrie's original plans quite a bit. There have been a few different figures and collectibles over the years to commemorate Boba's original all-white armor, but none that were based solely on McQuarrie's original design. That's where Sideshow Collectibles steps in. As part of its new Star Wars Concept Art series of premium format figures, the Boba Fett that had previously only lived as a painting or sketch will soon be realized in 3D. Continue reading…

Giving Back Some Happy Lesbians: Talking to the Creators of 'Honey and Venom'

Imagine, if you will, being a goddess of ancient Rome. You've got power, supplicants, luxurious raiment, a devout young priestess you've fallen in love with. Suddenly it's 2,000 years later, and while you're still doing your thing --- with the horns and the robes and the lack of understanding of electricity --- the rest of the world is all gas station minimarts and doric columns on the sides of 'We Are Happy To Serve You' coffee mugs. You do, at least, find your priestess, resplendent as ever in the denim shorts and crop top she's traded in her toga for. But...she doesn't know who you are. She doesn't understand why you're dressed they way you are. She's lost her memory of what you meant to each other entirely. Such is the tale of the goddess Axiothea and her priestess Caelia, the subject of Payton Francis and Megan C.'s recently-launched webcomic, Honey And Venom. Eager to get the details on this charming new read, ComicsAlliance sat down with them to talk collaboration, Euripedes, and Dionysian cults. Continue reading…

She's Got it Where it Counts: Building Lego's New Star Wars Millennium Falcon

If you're wondering how long it takes to build a Millennium Falcon, the answer is, "About three Star Wars movies." Well, that's for a Lego version anyway. I couldn't really tell you how long it takes to actually build a Corellian YT-1300 freighter because trying to measure build time in the Star Wars universe isn't exactly easy. Though we picked up this new Force Awakens edition of the Millennium Falcon back on Force Friday, things were just too hectic until recently to put the Falcon together. After spending a few weekends assembling the Lego Marvel SHIELD Helicarrier, I wanted to make sure we had ample time to devote to getting the Falcon finished in a reasonable time. Continue reading…

New Marvel Book Series Sees Korean Creators Take On Classic Avengers Stories

The world is simply too full of comics that most of us are never going to read. For example, all the manga that gets translated into English is just the tip of that particular iceberg, and the French market is brimming with comics that you're unlikely to get to if you don't read French. So it's especially dispiriting to consider that Korea's wealth of home-grown comics, or manhwa, has a presence among English language readers that makes even those libraries look bountiful. All of which means that Marvel publishing an adaptation of Roy Thomas and John Buscema's classic 'origin of Ultron' storyline from the late '60s Avengers comics from a group of Korean manhwa creators may be the first experience a lot of readers will have of Korean comics. Jim Lee's 'Batman: Europa' #1 Pits The Dark Knight Against Killer Croc And A Brick Wall [Preview]

There are a lot of reasons that I could never be Batman, but I think that the most important one is the difference in how we react to illness. The second I catch even the smallest kind of sniffle, all I want to do is turn myself into a blanket burrito, groan about the inevitability of death and maybe, maybe, if I can muster up the strength for it, play Super Mario Bros. 3. Batman, on the other hand, reacts to a deadly virus by punching a crocodile man through a brick wall.

That, at least, is the opening of Batman: Europa, the new miniseries that sends Batman on a world-traveling adventure and marks the return of Jim Lee to drawing Batman for the first issue. Check out an exclusive preview below for all the Croc-punching action (and a mild cough)!

ICYMI: 'Batman '66' Just Ended By Telling The Origin Of The TV Show's Opening Credits

Batman '66 was too good for this fallen world. With this week's digital-first issue, the series has finally come to an end after 73 chapters, and in that time, it's been an incredible tribute to the classic TV series that's also involved some incredible innovation, introducing new, '60s style takes on villains that never made it to the show, and operating on a scale that a TV show could never quite match. At its heart, though, the main appeal of the series was the way that it incorporated the signature styles of the show, which is why it's so great that it ended the way it did. In case you missed it, the final issue of Batman '66 is an origin story for the show's opening credits. Continue reading…

Tom Fowler Launches Kickstarter For 'Dungeons & Dragons & Doodles'

Tom Fowler is one of the best artists going and has been for a very long time, but as much as I've enjoyed his work in comics, my favorite project he's done is unquestionably D&D&D. Originally posted on Tumblr, it's a series of sketches inspired by his exploits in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, full of monsters, broadswords, and frequently naked giants charging into battle. Now, Fowler's collecting those sketches into a 100-page hardcover art book, and he's funding the project with a Kickstarter campaign that you're probably going to want to be a part of. Clear Your Walls: Mondo Announces Two More Phantom City Collective 'Batman: The Animated Series' Posters

It was only last week that I was getting downright covetous of Mondo's new line of limited Phantom City Collective prints inspired by Batman: The Animated Series. They're fantastic, with moody and iconic images that live up to the groundbreaking art style of the show, and if we're being honest with each other, I want enough of them to cover every flat surface in my home and possibly the insides of my eyelids. But as is usually the case with these things, that last set went pretty fast, and once again, I missed my chance. Now, however, we're getting another chance. Tomorrow, Nov. 12, they're going to be putting up two more Phantom City Collective art prints based on two more classic BTAS episodes: "Nothing To Fear" and "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?" Lego Marvel's Avengers Recruits Agent Carter, Fin Fang Foom and More

The roster for Lego Marvel's Avengers is going to be one of the largest yet for TT Games' Lego series. With each passing entry, the developer tries its hardest to outdo itself, and it's not all that hard when you have as vast a catalog of heroes and villains as Marvel has built up over the years. TT Games has also always prided itself in being able to mix in a lot of the more popular characters, such as your Iron Mans and your Captain Americas, with some lesser-known deep cuts like Damage Control and Mastermind in the previous game, Lego Marvel Super Heroes. With this upcoming entry, that same attention to detail on both sides of the character coin is returning. A lot has happened in the Marvel Universes, both comic and cinematic, since TT last dabbled with the brand, and today's new character reveals show that there's not a single stone the developer won't unturn if it makes for a fun new addition to the roster. The Empire Strikes Bat: Terry and Bruce Re-enact One of Star Wars' Most Pivotal Scenes

Typically, Star Wars and Batman aren't two topics you'd freely associate. Though both are clearly very big players in the genre geek space, the closest you'd come to a crossover of any kind is in some fan art or fan fiction that mashes the two iconic properties together. However, that's not always the case, and sometimes the universe comes together in spectacular, unexpected ways. This past weekend at Rhode Island Comic Con, both Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle were on hand for a "Voices of Batman" panel. It's one thing to get to see the longtime voice of Batman and his futuristic successor in person to chat about their experiences playing different versions of the Dark Knight. It's another entirely to witness them act out one of the most memorable scenes in cinematic history as Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis. That's just what happened when a Batman cosplayer approached the mic, and asked the dynamic duo if they'd re-enact Darth Vader's and Luke Skywalker's exchange in Cloud City. Continue reading…

The She-Devil With a Sword Cuts Her Way Out of the Hyborian Age and Onto Your Shelf

Robert E. Howard may not have created Red Sonja directly, but his inspiration for the she-devil with a sword Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith would craft for the Marvel Comics incarnation of Conan the Barbarian is undeniable. Since appearing in that comic back in the 1970s, Sonja's gone on to be a rather large part of the Hyborian mythos, expanding beyond mere guest-star in Conan tales into her own full-fledged adventuress. As one of the preeminent fantasy bad-asses, Red Sonja's always been able to find and inspire audiences no matter which publisher has been telling her tales.

While she's been a staple of Dynamite's catalog as of late, there are surprisingly few Red Sonja collectibles on the market. There have been statues from time to time, but Sideshow Collectibles has been the leader of the pack when it comes to Sonja goods as of late. Already with one impressive Red Sonja statue under its belt, the collectible company has another in the works that shows a different, more detailed side of the crimson-haired warrior.

The Kickstarter For 'Enforcer: Tough Luck' Combines Magic And Mobsters Into A Book You Oughtta Be Reading

Over the past few years, Kickstarter has become a great place to find (and fund) some pretty great indie comics. There's just one big problem: If you don't hear about something while it's being funded, then there's a good chance you've missed your shot on not just helping to get a good comic out there, but getting a copy of your own. That's why I'm happy to find out about Enforcer: Tough Luck, the new comic from Brian Funk, Artyom Trakhanov, Ryan Cody and Thomas Mauer. There are only a few days left in the Kickstarter campaign set to fund the first of five issues, but it's well worth your time to check it out. It's a story of mobsters and magic, and it's got some truly fantastic art. Continue reading…

Funko Takes the Mysterious Nature of Batman and Miniaturizes It

If you thought Funko's plans for the Batman: Arkham video game series was going to be limited to a series of Pop figures, you were wrong, buck-o. The Caped Crusader and his rogues gallery are way too popular to be contained in just one figure line. Time and time again, from just about every company that makes anything Batman-related at all, they try to inject the Dark Knight into as many formats as possible. That's why it's not at all surprising to see Rocksteady Studios' take on the characters appear as Mystery Minis. The stylized vinyl figures are much smaller than your standard Funko Pops, though it doesn't appear as if these Mystery Minis will come with any sort of rare figures. Typically the line has a variety of characters with some interesting variants short-packed to entice you to buy more of the blind box figures. However, like the Avengers: Age of Ultron Mystery Minis, it seems that there will be just 12 of the Batman: Arkham figures from across the whole franchise, included. That means with a 1:12 ratio, you should be able to get a whole set in just one box. Continue reading…

'Mystery Girl' #1 Solves The Mystery Of How To Make A Great First Issue [Review]

There aren't a whole lot of things I love seeing in comics more than a good high concept, and Paul Tobin, Alberto Albuquerque and Marissa Louise's Mystery Girl has one of the best premises I've seen in a long time. The basic idea is more than just a girl who solves mysteries; this is a girl who has already solved every mystery the second she hears about it, for reasons she doesn't even understand herself. That's the kind of hook that grabs your attention and refuses to let go. But it's also the kind of hook that sets up a lot of expectations. It's such a simple, adaptable idea that there are a million places to go with it, and if Tobin, Albuquerque and Louise didn't stick the landing on the finished product, then the disappointment that they had such a great premise and did't do something amazing with it would've been every bit as intense as the excitement of hearing that idea to begin with. Fortunately, that's not a problem --- unsurprisingly, they've put out a first issue that's every bit as good as you want it to be. Continue reading…

2000 AD To Reprint 'Misty' Stories For The First Time In 35 Years

Nowadays, I think we can all agree that Thrillpower is for everyone, but that was not always the case. In the late '70s, with 2000 AD a success after its first year of publication thanks to strips like Judge Dredd, the publishers decided that the world needed "2000 AD for girls," and thus Misty was introduced to the world.

The weekly magazine ran between 1978 and 1980, directed at girls with a focus on supernatural horror, and is still remembered fondly despite its relatively short 101-issue run. Now, for the first time in 35 years, it's set to be reprinted starting next September, starting with stories from Pat Mills, John Armstrong, Malcolm Shaw and Brian Delaney.

Nobody Does It Better: The Best James Bond Fan Art Ever

It doesn't matter if you're talking about Sean Connery or Daniel Craig. James Bond has a classic kind of cool that can't be denied. And while he's been put beside some ingenious gadgets, iconic weapons, and sweet cars, it's never been the toys that make the man. If anything, Bond has done more for product placement than it ever did for him. He's the classic case of women wanting him and men wanting to be him (but also men wanting him and women wanting to be him, let's be honest). Unless, of course, you're a megalomaniacal villain. Then he's the bane of your existence. In celebration of that love and the new franchise entry, we've hunted down some of the best art the fandom has to offer. From the classic Connery to the fresh Craig, we're happy to share some of the best fan artist renditions of the world's most beloved spy. Continue reading…

Post-'Justice League' DC Movies Might Still Explore Origin Stories

DC and Warner Bros. aren’t really following the Marvel model when it comes to their superhero cinematic universe. Instead of establishing each hero with separate solo films leading up to the first Justice League movie, WB is introducing some characters in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while others will make their debut in Justice League. But will WB go back and explore the origins of these superheroes after they’ve been introduced in other films?

So far, the voice casting for the LEGO Batman movie has been exceptionally on-point, with Will Arnett reprising his satirically brooding role as the titular hero alongside Michael Cera’s Robin, Rosario Dawson’s Batgirl and Zach Galifianakis’ Joker. On The Cheap: Get Waid & Samnee's 'The Rocketeer: Cargo Of Doom' For Four Bucks

This week at Comixology, IDW has a sale on miniseries collections, and there's a lot of good stuff in there to check out. You can grab Walt Simonson's Star Slammers, for instance, or check out Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen's all-too-short Shockrockets and get bummed out about how it was only a miniseries all over again. If, however, you're looking for the best way to spend four bucks, then there's one story that you need to set your sights on: The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom. Originally released in 2012 as part of IDW's first big push to return Cliff Secord to pulpy, high-flying adventures, Cargo of Doom comes courtesy of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee --- a team you've probably heard of --- and features the Rocketeer battling against an entire ship-load of dinosaurs, a premise that results in one of the single best comic book panels ever published. Battlefront's Latest Trailer Teases Your Involvement in The Battle of Jakku

There's an insurmountable amount of hype surrounding Star Wars this year. From the figures to the books to the trading cards to the games and movies, if it has Star Wars in the name, people are excited. If you can somehow manage to tie one of those things to another, the hype levels begin approaching stratospheric levels. While we were told Star Wars Battlefront was going to be one of the first places we'd see the destitute landscape of Jakku, a planet that's been focused on quite a bit in trailers for The Force Awakens, we had little idea of what exactly that meant. With today's teaser trailer for the new map, questions of "What will it be like?" were immediately replaced with statements of "I want to go to there." Taking place 29 years before The Force Awakens, the Battle of Jakku happened about a year after the Battle of Endor, which signaled the first indication the Rebel Alliance might rid the galaxy of the Empire's influence. There were numerous conflicts after the destruction of the second Death Star, as much of the literature under the "Journey to The Force Awakens" banner has revealed. Though Jakku's present in lots of Star Wars' recent content, Battlefront will present our first actual on-the-ground glimpse of that landmark conflict, including watching those massive Star Destroyers fall from orbit in magnificent fashion. Mixing Paranormal and Practical: Jen Van Meter Talks 'The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage: Second Lives'

Valiant's Dr. Mirage is returning with a new miniseries next month, and in the yearsince the end of the last miniseries focusing on paranormal expert and ghost-talker Shan Fong, a whole lot seems to have changed. For one thing, her deceased husband has returned to the land of the living — or at least, his spirit has. That alone changes a lot of the dynamics of her life, and it shows in the new series, The Death Defying Dr. Mirage: Second Lives. Some things haven't changed, though. Namely, the creative team of writer Jen Van Meter and artist Roberto De La Torre. In advance of the first issue's December 23 release, we spoke with Van Meter about finding Shan in a very different place in her life, the book's relationship themes, ghost research, the new series' tone shift, and much more. Ryan North's 'Romeo And/Or Juliet' Is Coming In June

Ryan North's To Be Or Not To Be is one of my all-time favorite books, and just to give you an idea of how serious that is, keep in mind that I also own a novel where Batman fights a car that's possessed by a ghost. The Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style take on Hamlet, built around that simple joke of the title, has an incredible sense of humor, an incredible roster of illustrators, and a brilliant use of the form that involves changing lead characters, a second choosable path adventure hidden within the first, and even a game of chess played against Queen Gertrude, and it's been one of my go-to recommendations ever since it came out.

But if you were a Kickstarter backer for that original campaign, then you might remember that North promised a second Shakespeare-inspired game book. Now, we've finally got an announcement, and it looks like Romeo And/Or Juliet is set for release next June.

Bruce is Having a Very Angry Christmas in Prime 1 Studios' Batman Noel Statue

I can't imagine the holidays are very fun for Batman. Sure he's got that big surrogate family around some times, but bad guys always seem to have some kind of tricks up their sleeves to ruin the season for the innocent people of Gotham. Case in point, the original graphic novel, Batman Noel, in which Lee Bermejo does a superhero retelling of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, and must track the Joker down because that guy is always up to no good. Bob Crachit and Tiny Tim do appear, and Superman and Catwoman fill the roles of the visiting "ghosts." And yes, Batman is Scrooge. Obviously the developers at WB Montreal were big fans of the book, as they included Bermejo's redesigned Batsuit as an unlockable alternate skin for Batman in Batman: Arkham Origins. Who could blame them really? It's a sharp interpretation that doesn't get too cute, and keeps the basic elements of Batman's core design in tact while allowing Bermejo to include plenty of technical details. While DC Collectibles does have an action figure based on Bermejo's design coming in 2016, Prime 1 Studios will be releasing a quarter-scale statue based on the Arkham Origins version of the suit for those of you with much more expendable income. 'Wonder Woman' Eyes Nicole Kidman to Play an Amazonian Warrior

The cast for Warner Bros. and DC’s solo Wonder Woman movie already had a lot going for it with Gal Gadot in the lead role — although we’ve only seen glimpses of her in action as the iconic superhero, Gadot looks like she might steal the Batman v Superman show next spring.
