It's Alive! Best Frankenstein Fan Art Ever

Halloween is almost here. In fact, it basically couldn’t be any closer because it’s All Hallow’s Eve. Or Devil’s Night if you’re a Crow fan. As you’re planning your spooky activities, mapping out your candy begging routes, and putting the finishing touches on your costumes, we’ve got one last treat Halloween treat for you! This ghoulish gallery devoted to everyone’s favorite shambling, abomination to medicine and religion, Frankenstein! I don’t want to get too book report-y here, because you have access to Wikipedia for that, but Frankenstein’s grip on the public’s imagination, and more importantly how quickly and how long it’s held that grip, is something that cannot be undervalued or disregarded. Whatever reason has brought you here to look at these images, I’m going to assume at least part of it has to do with what place Frankenstein (or “Frankenstein’s Monster” if you’re one of those people) holds in your heart or your nightmares. Nobody Cared About Those Jerky Humour Books: Evan Dorkin Looks Back On His 'Bill & Ted' Series [Interview]

Bill & Ted fans recently got some most non-heinous news with Boom Studios' announcement of a hardcover collection of the 1991 Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book series. Written and drawn by indie comics idol Evan Dorkin (Milk & Cheese, World's Funnest Comics, Beasts of Burden), the series was one of the best comics of the time, blending the manic energy of the films with Dorkin's legendary wit and crammed-to-the gills panels. Hopefully this cult classic will find a wider audience this December, with the full-color collection of all of Dorkin's issues plus his adaptation of the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey movie. We sat down with Dorkin to discuss the news, the genesis of the series and his early career. Continue reading…

'Suicide Squad' Star Will Smith Addresses the Movie's Crazy Love Triangle

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad movie looks like a lot of things: a gritty comic book movie, a super villain super-team-up, an action-packed anti-hero story, a showcase for Batman villain / career nut job Harley Quinn, etc. etc. It looks like a lot of things, but what it doesn’t look like is a love story. According to Ayer and Will Smith, there is actually a bit of a love story happening in Suicide Squad — actually, it’s more of a wacky love triangle. Continue reading…

'Deadpool' Will Feature Much More of Colossus Than the 'X-Men' Films

Colossus has been a mainstay in the X-Men comic book universe since the mid-’70s, but we’ve seen so little of his character in the actual films — he’s appeared in three of the five X-Men movies, but his involvement is always so brief. That’s going to change in the Deadpool film, as actor Andre Tricoteux has revealed that we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of Colossus. Continue reading…

Thumbnail: How Villainous Moriarty Takes Heroic Turns in Comics

Professor James Moriarty, the “Napoleon of Crime” and the arch-nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, is one of the most iconic villains in fiction. And that’s always been a little odd. As any die-hard Sherlockian could tell you, if you go strictly by "the Canon" — the four Sherlock Holmes novels and 56 short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle — Moriarty is not all that important. Referenced in the novel The Valley of Fear and a few later short stories, Moriarty only really appears in 'The Adventure of the Final Problem', where he does what he was created to do: kill off Holmes so Doyle wouldn’t have to write him anymore. Obviously, this didn’t last. Moriarty really only gained his mythic status and place as Holmes’ rival through later adaptations in radio, film, TV and of course comics. For their part, outside of direct Canon adaptions, comics have tended to portray Moriarty as an antihero. Continue reading…

The Issue: Imperfect Harmony in 'Buffy Season Eight' #21

Welcome to The Issue, where we'll take a look at some of the strangest, most interesting and most distinctive single issue comic stories ever to grace the medium. You know the ones; silent issues, sideways issues, backwards issues; the comics that try to do something different with the form, and stand out from the series they belong to. Buffy Harmony Cover In the last installment, we talked about issue #12 of The Invisibles, a comic that takes a sympathetic look at one of the series' throwaway baddies. This time round, it's 'Harmonic Divergence', issue #21 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, written by Jane Espenson and drawn by Georges Jeanty. It's a comic that takes a very different approach to a similar idea and, as Hallowe'en is nearly upon us, throws in some spooky Draculas too. Continue reading…

Star Wars Battlefront Invites You to Take Part in the Alliance's Most Desperate Hour

It's a big year for Star Wars, in case you didn't know. Aside from a wealth of new action figures and collectibles, books, comics, and that new movie or whatever, there's also going to be a new installment in the fan-favorite Star Wars Battlefront series. It's been too long since players have been able to pick up an E-11 blaster rifle and defend the likes of Mos Eisley or Hoth from the Rebel Scum (TM), but soon we'll be able to travel back to that galaxy far, far away to blast the Empire's enemies back from whence they came. During Sony's PlayStation press event at Paris Games Week, DICE unveiled a new gameplay trailer for Battlefront which offered the first looks at newly-announced Heroes like Leia, Han and Palpatine in action. There's a lot of trench warfare happening, as well as some questionable voice acting, but Battlefront appears to be shaping up to be everything fans have been waiting for from the series since it vanished those many years ago. Find Out What Villains Want With Batman Posters By Steven Waters

The record will show that I'm pretty biased on this subject, but it's hard to argue that Batman doesn't have the single greatest gallery of foes in the history of comic books. His villains are uniquely compelling, with fantastic visuals and character hooks so simple and so enduring that, more often than not, what they want can be boiled down into a single word. That's the premise behind a beautiful set of posters by Canadian artist Steven Waters that combine minimalist silhouettes of the Caped Crusader's greatest enemies with simple captions about why they choose to break the law in a city where that'll usually get you punched out and thrown into the world's worst hospital. 'Gambit' Movie Reportedly Also Eyeing Shane Black and Joe Cornish

Reinventing the Superhero: Julie Kerwin Talks 'IAmElemental' and Empowerment for Girls

The great thing about Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites is the ability for creators to fill a void with a product or project they're incredibly passionate about. More and more, we're seeing niche action figure and collectible creators turn to this method to get their ideas out there. It's a hard road to commercial success at retail, but if you can reach out directly to your audience, there's a chance you'll make some headway towards bigger things and wider availability. Seeing a hole in the action figure market for not just female characters, but female characters more representative of real women, IAmElemental campaigned to bring such a series to life. After a successful round of crowdfunding in 2014, the company released its first line-up, Courage, this year. We caught up with Julie Kerwin, chief elemental officer at IamElemental, at New York Comic Con to talk about the line, where it's headed, and whether or not it can succeed in a crowded market. Looking Back to the Future: The History of the Future in Comics

In case you don't have a television or a computer or eyes or cognitive function and hadn't heard, today — October 21, 2015, in case you're reading this... in the future — marks the day that Marty McFly visited when he traveled to the future in 1989's Back to the Future 2: 2 Back 2 Future. (The actual day, and not, as your Facebook friends would have you believe, every single other day of the last ten years.) This movie proved an eerily prescient oracle, correctly predicting such everyday occurrences here in the future as flying cars, the trend of wearing two ties, and the ubiquity of the fax machine. Comics as a medium, and especially the superhero genre, has always had at least one foot firmly planted in the sphere of science fiction, and, as such, has frequently used elements of time travel and premonition in order to present visions of the future; frequently harrowing visions meant to show just how important the actions of a title's protagonists are. You Can Build Your Own Pikachu Next Year, And By You, I Mean Me

I've never really had the inclination to go into a Build-A-Bear Workshop. To be honest, the whole thing seemed like a hassle, and when I thought back to when I was a kid, I kind of felt like the process of actually making a stuffed animal was probably the least fun part of having a stuffed animal, and paying extra to do it myself felt like it was more than a little bit overpriced. But then they announced that shoppers will have the opportunity to build their own Pikachu, and I realized there was no amount of money I would not pay to make that happen.

A Princess, a Scoundrel and an Emperor Join Star Wars Battlefront's Roster

With less than a month to go until Star Wars Battlefront arrives, DICE and EA are finally sharing more details on the heroes and villains joining the battle on both sides of the virtual war in that galaxy far, far away. Already, players knew familiar faces like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader would be part of the action, alongside the bounty hunter no one can seem to get enough of, Boba Fett. Those three won't be the only special characters fans get to play with, as the sides are going to get evened out a bit with these new additions. Though Leia is a Jedi, during Battlefront's timeline, she doesn't quite know it yet. Since she's best known in the original trilogy for being an incredible leader, building her character for the game was a bit of a challenge for DICE. As lead hero designer Jamie Keen described on the PlayStation Blog, Leia's tricky to create as a unique character since she doesn't have a favorite weapon or visible ability in the films. With that in mind, DICE ended up focusing on her leadership abilities. Continue reading…

The Avengers will be forced to choose sides in the battle between Captain America and Iron Man in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, and while friends will become enemies in the epic showdown, there will be an actual villain in the mix: Daniel Bruhl is portraying Baron Zemo, the Nazi-era baddie from the Marvel comics, but the actor says directors Joe and Anthony Russo are putting a bit of an unexpected spin (or two) on his character to freshen him up for his big screen debut.

EXCLUSIVE: Heavy Metal Undergoes Editorial Shift, Morrison's First Issue Delayed

On The Cheap: Get Pretty Much Everything In Comixology's Grant Morrison Sale, Especially Aztek

This week, Comixology has a huge sale on Grant Morrison's work for DC and Vertigo, and as much as I like writing these columns and helping to turn people on to some good stuff, this is one time where I don't really feel like I can give a whole lot of direction. As you may already know, Morrison is pretty good at writing comic books, and his collaborations with artists like Frank Quitely, Howard Porter, Rags Morales and Richard Case has produced some of the best classics of the modern era. But as tempting as it is to just say, "Hey, just because you love All Star Superman, that doesn't mean you'll really like The Invisibles" and call it a day, there is one thing that you should definitely be on the lookout for: the complete collection of Aztek: The Ultimate Man, one of the most underrated, under-appreciated superhero comics of the '90s, can be yours for five bucks. Relive All That Court Drama With Udon's Art of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies

Say there would-be lawmakers, have you longed for they day when you could go behind the scenes of the best virtual court room drama video games have ever seen? Are you the armchair litigator that finds herself constantly objecting to every motion or line of questioning the prosecution takes? Do you have a penchant for wild hairstyles, find your self attracting the attentions of weirdo attorneys on the other side of the court room, and generally appreciate the hard work of a good gumshoe detective? Then Udon and Capcom might just have the one thing to tide you over until recess is over.

After already publishing a comprehensive art book focused on the creation of the first four Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney games, Udon has returned with a new tome focused on fifth entry in the popular and successful series. The Art of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies is packed with materials used to develop the characters, look and style of the most recent courtroom simulator. The interior features 240 pages of original art work used by Capcom's art team when developing the game, including sketches of characters like Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, Miles Edgeworth, and Athena Cykes in all manner of poses and emotions.

Art of Color: Javier Rodriguez, Color Chameleon

Archie And Friends Get Into Halloween Hijinx With 'Masquerade Mishaps'

Is there any holiday more geared specifically towards teenage hijinx than Halloween? I mean, I love Christmas, but the shenanigans involved in trying to find the right present for someone aren't really all that wild, and nobody really gets all that excited about, say, Arbor Day. Halloween, though? Candy! Costumes! Mistaken identities! Parties that go haywire for any number of reasons! It's the perfect time for teens to find trouble while dressed up as bears, and I know this because I have been reading Archie comics for a very long time. And now, to celebrate the season of scares, Archie has put together their next digital collection: Masquerade Mishaps, which follows up on last week's amazingly titled Josie and the Scaredy Cats with 100 pages of costume-themed comedy from Archie and the gang. It's out on the 23rd, but if you can't wait, check out a preview below! Continue reading…

Watch Michigan State's Marching Band Pay Tribute to Marvel

The gods of Marvel are not like our friendly, crinkly-eyed Judeo-Christian gods. They are the furious, tempestuous gods of old, and they demand a proper tribute from the fleshy weaklings on Earth. The Spartan Marching Band of Michigan State University saw fit to give glory to their chosen deities through the only method they know, combining humanity's three highest art forms: music, flag-twirling, and arranging standing human bodies in intricate patterns.

The Delinquents: A Beginner's Guide to the Valiant Universe

When it comes to shared comics universes, most people turn their mind straight to Marvel and DC, publishers that have mastered the concept over several decades. But a few years ago, Valiant Comics came roaring back, relaunching themselves for a contemporary audience, and providing a simpler superhero universe to get to grips with. Yet even a small shared universe can feel like a lot to learn about, and readers may have held back from taking the plunge. To help those readers whose curiosity has been piqued, we've assembled our own team of 'delinquents' to break things down. Steve Morris knows the Valiant Universe inside out; J.A. Micheline is completely new to the universe. Micheline has the questions, like what exactly is a "psiot", and who is that bloke in the blue and yellow helmet, and why is everybody so afraid of a goat; and Morris has answers. We hope. Bizarro Back Issues: Bizarro Meets Frankenstein! (1961)

First things first: Bizarro is terrifying. Yes, with the exception of maybe two stories, he's been played for laughs for around 57 years, but if you stop to think about it for a minute, the very idea is one of the most sinister things superhero comics have ever come up with; someone who has all of Superman's powers, all of his unstoppable indestructibility, but a concept of morality that exists in complete opposition to Superman's, and that will not, that can not ever change? It's harrowing. But as scary as he might be, I don't really consider Bizarro to be a Halloween monster. "Supervillain" isn't quite right either, but there's nothing about Bizarro that I'd think would put him in competition with, say, Dracula or the Wolfman. But then again, I'm not Otto Binder, who apparently thought that Superman's imperfect duplicate battling it out with Frankenstein for the title of the greatest of all monsters was something that should definitely happen. You know, except for the part where it's not actually Frankenstein. Continue reading…

'Ant-Man' One of Marvel's Biggest Movies, Ever (…in China)

China: They make people for Earth, stuff for America, and blockbusters for Hollywood. As one of the fastest-growing markets on the planet, Hollywood films constantly jockey for supremacy in the bustling, densely overpopulated China. And every now and then, the Chinese moviegoing public can provide an American film with a valuable infusion of box-office capital, certifying a smash hit or creating new ones from struggling pictures. This past weekend, the folks at Marvel Studios received a pleasant surprise via a reminder of China’s buying power when their Ant-Man performed impressively at the Asian box offices.

Conservatives Outraged That New Captain America Is As Political As Original Captain America

Captain America: Sam Wilson #1, by Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuna, has caused a stir since its release last week. The second launch for former Falcon Sam Wilson in his role as the current thrower of the mighty shield sees him taking on the Sons of the Serpent, who are abducting Mexicans attempting to cross the border into the US. The same issue also sees Cap making a public call for national unity, which gets him branded as a partisan, anti-American, and a socialist. Conservatives on social media are riled up, with some petitioning for writer Nick Spencer's 'resignation'. Political advocacy group The MacIver Insitute was apparently the first to claim the Sons of the Serpent as its ideological peers in a YouTube video objecting to the storyline, while Saturday morning's Fox And Friends TV talk show saw co-host Clayton Henry pine for for the days when Cap was "punching Hitler" and fighting typical Captain America villains, rather than "going up against conservatives." Courtesy of Archie Comics, ComicsAlliance brings you an advance look at new periodical comic books, collected editions, and graphic novels going on sale in January 2016 from the publisher’s Archie Action line featuring Sonic the Hedgehog. Though the Archie Action line will be minus some "mega" fun in the new year, that doesn't mean Sonic the Hedgehog won't still be up to his old tricks. Eggman just never gets tired of trying to take the Blue Blur down, but Sonic and his friends appear to be up to whatever task is needed in both the main book and Sonic Universe. Maybe one of these days, Sonic will actually find some time to finish putting his planet back together. Provided Eggman gives the poor guy a break. Continue reading…

Thumbnail: New Thor, New THOOMS; The Epic Sound Effects of Russell Dauterman's Asgard

There is probably no superhero comic better known for the lettering of its sound effects than Walter Simonson's 1983-1987 run on Marvel's Thor. John Workman's lettering on that seminal, still-beloved run was so integral that it's difficult to imagine those comics without it. Workman's big, bold DOOMs, THOOMs and KRAKATHOOMs hit readers' eyes and imaginations like graphic hammer blows. Simonson's art alone could tell powerful, affecting stories, but Workman's lettering really made those Thor comics sing... and scream and thunder and crash and splinter. How fitting then that the most recent Thor comic, featuring a brand new star character wielding Mjolnir to protect Midgard, should also have such a highly distinct sound effect style, and yet have those sound effects stand out in a completely different way than those of the Simonson/Workman Thor comics of yore. Artist Andre Araujo Constructs a Dystopian Android City for 'Man Plus' [Interview]

For the last few weeks, writer/artist André Araújo has been publishing pages from his new Titan Comics series Man Plus as a webcomic, offering a free look at the opening chapter in his story about a robotic dystopia. As he puts it, it's a story about "a shimmering metropolis where technology rules with a heavy hand, and cyborg strike teams are commonplace" --- or in other words, the perfect chance for him to assemble an entire city using only his imagination. Having completed a thesis in architecture, Man Plus provides Araújo with the opportunity to realize some of his ideas on the page, and create not only a futuristic world and narrative, but a futuristic landscape as well. With the series heading to print in January next year, ComicsAlliance spoke to Araújo to find out more about how it came to be. Continue reading…

The Kids Take An Extremely Ill-Advised Field Trip In 'Gotham Academy' #11 [Preview]

It might be a crime-ridden urban hellscape that's frequently destroyed by a murder clown, but the one thing you can say about Gotham City is that it has some great tourist attractions. There's the Crossword Puzzle Museum, the Second National Bank (at the corner of 2nd Street and Second Avenue), and the Ace Chemical Plant/Monarch Playing Card Factory historical site. Any of these destinations would make for a fun and educational field trip.

So of course, that's not at all where the kids from Gotham Academy are going on their first trip into the city. Instead, Olive, Maps and the rest of the gang have decided that they should immediately go into the nearest available blind alley, and I have never been more worried about their safety than I am right now. Check out an exclusive preview of the next issue, Gotham Academy #11, by Brenden Fletcher, Becky Cloonan and Karl Kerschl.

Kamala, Miles, Sam & Jane Assemble for Best Avengers Line-Up Ever in 'A-NA-DA' #1 [Preview]

Kamala Khan is an Avenger now, and that's pretty great. Miles Morales is also an Avenger now, and that's great too. And, of course, Jane Foster is Thor, and Sam Wilson is Captain America, and Vision is Vision, and Sam Alexander is Nova, and... well, Tony Stark is still Iron Man, I think. But I'd be happy if they replaced that guy too, because replacing those other heroes has honestly made this one of the most exciting and vibrant Avengers line-ups in years! Let's replace Tony Stark with America Chavez! But even with boring ol' Tony sticking around, I am on board for this team, and hopefully you are too. But in case you need convincing, here's an unlettered preview of All-New All-Different Avengers #1 by Mark Waid and Mahmud Asrar! Continue reading…

Sonic and Team Bring the Thunder in 'Sonic the Hedgehog' #277 [Preview]

Poor, Sonic the Hedgehog. The dude just never catches a break. Unless of course the "break" you're talking about is how his whole world is still shattered. Literally. Sonic and his friends have been working tirelessly to repair their planet since it fractured in the events after "Worlds Collide." Maybe if Sonic had time to catch his breath instead of constantly thwarting Eggman's latest machinations, Mobius wouldn't be the hot mess it still is today. But even Sonic can't do everything on his own, and this issue will also see Sally and Bunnie track down the final Chaos Emerald. You might recall the Chaos Emeralds were last used during "Worlds Unite" to give Mega Man and Sonic the power boost needed to take Sigma down for good. As long as they don't fall into the hands of Eggman, everyone should be okay, right? Continue reading…

A Good Problem to Have: Hasbro Talks Star Wars Black Series at NYCC [Interview]

There have been Star Wars toys on the shelves at retailers consistently since the mid-1990s. With the re-releases of the classic trilogy and the actual releases of the prequel trilogy, Star Wars has managed to not only stay hot for collectors, but thrive at retail in ways many other toy lines that started in the 1970s could only dream of matching.

This year is a big year for Star Wars movies, in case you hadn't heard. That also means it's a big year for Star Wars collectibles. It's such a big deal in fact, that an entire day, Force Friday, was built around the new toy releases themed around the upcoming sequel, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

With figures from the upcoming film in high demand, it's a wonder the team working on Star Wars at Hasbro has any free time at all. Fortunately, we caught up with Hasbro's Star Wars team after getting a look at some of the new Star Wars Black Series collectibles coming later this year.

Ask Chris #262: Where Oh Werewolf; Do Werewolves Make Everything Better?

Q: Are there any superheroes who can't be improved by making them also a werewolf? -- @daveexmachina A: My friends, I am being 100% real with you when I say that questions like this are exactly why I started writing this column in the first place. So let's see here. If you go back and look at my work over the past ten years, it's probably going to be pretty clear that when it comes to your classic Halloween monsters, werewolves don't really do much for me. I am and will always be a Dracula man, but I can't deny that throwing in some extra hair, a couple of claws, and an uncontrollable monthly blood lust is something that could make pretty much any character in comics a whole lot more interesting. Which, now that I think of it, is probably why it's actually happened way more than you might remember. Continue reading…

As the latest series in the long-running tokusatsu franchise, Ghost combines all the dirtbikes and jumpkicks that we've come to expect from Kamen Rider with a premise that feels like the Japanese equivalent of Kid Eternity, focusing on Takeru, a young ghost hunter killed in the line of duty, who has to collect the souls of dead heroes so that he can use their power to wish himself back to life.

And here's the bad news: It's only airing in Japan.

Hasbro's Marvel Legends Team Divulges the 'Secret Sauce' at NYCC [Interview]

Since Hasbro took over the Marvel action figure license a few years ago, the Legends line has been home to a fairly diverse cast of characters from the classic Marvel Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That trend looks to continue heading into the new year, where Hasbro already has its plans in motion for the early part of the year, including the Captain America: Civil War wave, and the first wave of the newly christened 3.75" Marvel Legends. During New York Comic Con, we were given an early look at some of Hasbro's plans for the Marvel Legends line for the upcoming year. Both the 6" and 3.75" lines will fall under the Legends banner moving forward, with new characters and some familiar faces filling out the rosters on both sides. After seeing everything that was on display, we had a chance to chat with some of Hasbro's Marvel Legends leads, Dwight Stall, senior Marvel product design manager, Mike Breslin, senior director, brand strategy and marketing, and Tony Colella, senior model artist, about Legends and its future. 74 Years Ago Today: An Anniversary Tribute To America's Not-So-Typical Teenager, Archie Andrews

In the early '40s, the comic book business was booming. Superheroes had lit the fuse on an explosion of a whole new popular medium, and while there were plenty of Superman and Batman knockoffs running around, publishers were finding their footing in other genres, too, from westerns to teen comedies. And on October 15, 1941, when Pep Comics #22 hit newsstands across the country (cover dated December 22), it was that last one that gave comics one of their most enduring, beloved, and important characters.

That character was Archie Andrews, and over the ensuing years he'd rack up one of the most interesting legacies in comics, one that included not only enduring success, but becoming synonymous with an entire genre, taking weird diversions into over-the-top drama and religious proselytizing ---- and becoming one of the very few fictional characters to ever have a #1 single.

Break Man Takes The Spotlight In 'Mega Man' #54 [Preview]

If you were a child in the '90s whose primary source of news was a subscription to Nintendo Power, then there were few things more thrilling than the saga of Break Man. When he first showed up in Mega Man III as an occasional obstacle and a mysterious plot device at the end, and was eventually revealed to be Mega Man's brother, it was probably the single greatest bit of drama in the series since the invention of running left-to-right and jumping. And not surprisingly, it's something that Archie's Mega Man comics have done a pretty fantastic job handling over the past four years. Now, as the series winds down, Break Man (aka Proto Man, aka Blues) is taking the spotlight for "Red Shift," a prologue story for the events of Mega Man IV, with a whole lot of questions about the nature of his existence. You know, for the kids! Check out an exclusive preview! Continue reading…

Living In The Shadows: Should You Be Reading 'Trees'?

When you look at the sheer range and number of original stories being told in comics form today, it’s hard to imagine a better time to be a comics reader. Online and in print, from all around the world, artists and writers are telling stories with their own voices and styles, and there’s so much to choose from that it’s sometimes difficult to know what to read next. With Should I Be Reading… ?, ComicsAlliance hopes to offer you a guide to some of the best original ongoing comics being published today. The last few years have been incredible for big, smart sci-fi comics. Saga, Copperhead, Kaptara, Nameless, Lazarus, Southern Cross... and those are just the ones coming out of Image. If you're a fan of anything alien, dystopic, robotic or just forward-looking, you have a lot of options. Equally, though, it can be difficult to make room for another space book, but Trees stands tall even in that crowded field. (Yes, that was a tree pun.) Continue reading…

Fantastic Five: Best Punches in Comics History

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our years on the Internet, it’s that there’s no aspect of comics that can’t be broken down and quantified in a single definitive list, preferably in amounts of five or ten. And since there’s no more definitive authority than ComicsAlliance, we’re taking it upon ourselves to compile Top Five lists of everything you could ever want to know about comics. As we all know, comics, and especially superhero comics, are gratuitously violent slugfests that corrupt the morals of children by telling them that we can solve all our problems with our fists and/or lasers. As such, there have been literally tens of thousands of punches thrown across the history of the superhero, and what I have done here is diligently scoured and subsequently rated each one on a 100-point scale so that I might objectively rate the five very best, rather than just writing about five different punches that seemed especially notable to me at the time I was composing this script, which I definitely did not do. No sir. Continue reading…

The 5,000-Year-Old Man: Robert Venditti Discusses The 'Personal' Story Of 'Wrath of the Eternal Warrior' [Interview]

In the three-plus years since Valiant Comics once again became a mainstay on comic shop shelves, The Eternal Warrior has emerged as a central character in the Valiant Universe, serving as the anchor for several series and events. Since starring in an eight-issue solo series by writer Greg Pak and artist Robert Gill, Gilad, the immortal protector of the geomancers, has taken on even more significance in the Valiant U.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior, out next month from writer Robert Venditti and artist Raul Allen, puts the de facto star of Book of Death and The Valiant in a whole new set of circumstances, facing down ancient, terrifying creatures in an "off-world" setting. To find out more about the character's strange new situation, we sat down with Venditti to get the scoop on how this strange environment will affect Gilad, the fallout from Book of Death, and writing a very personal story about a 5,000-year-old character.

Buy This BOO! Akira Toriyama's 'Cowa' Is The Vampire Wrestler Road Comedy You Need

Akira Toriyama might be the most famous comics creator that I have the least familiarity with, but I'm trying to remedy that. Slowly but surely, I'm making my way through a few of the pieces of his back catalog that aren't necessarily about Goku charging up to Super-Saiyan, and with Halloween on the horizon, I thought it was finally time to sit down with Cowa, the 1997 comedy manga about a little kid vampire on a mission to save his village from the ravages of the monster flu. I picked it up during Viz's last big digital manga sale and I've been saving it for the one month where I want to read about Draculas slightly more than I do for the rest of the year. Now that I've read it, I can highly, and probably unsurprisingly, recommend it. It's funny, it's adventurous, and it's not at all the story that it looks like at first glance. Continue reading…

Mega Bloks Travels the Galaxy and the Sewers With Star Trek and TMNT

During New York Comic Con, two all-new licenses were unveiled for the very first time by Mega Bloks. The block-building sets the company already offers run the gamut from Halo to Skylanders to Assassin's Creed and beyond, but the latest additions to the company's portfolio have long deserved their chance to shine in construction set form. Though we'd known Mega Bloks had the Star Trek and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles licenses, no one had seen much of what the company had planned. Though no official TMNT sets were shown off, we did get to see the first figures across the three different series Mega Bloks is producing. There were plenty of Star Trek figures too, but the actual sets were what really caught our attention. There are going to be plenty of sets released in 2016 and beyond, but at NYCC, Mega Bloks had three different kits for Star Trek on hand. Two comprised of ships, the very impressive classic USS Enterprise and the Klingon Battlecruiser, and the third was a transporter room set. All three looked impressive even in these early stages, but the scaled down Enterprise is definitely the star of the line. Or rather, it is for now without a bridge set on the horizon. One expects it can't be too far behind considering there's a transporter room already. Continue reading…

Sideshow Pits Familiar Heroes Against the Court of the Dead at NYCC

Since 2006, fans have flooded the Javitz Center year after year for New York Comic Con, but until this year, they've never been witness to magnificent pieces Sideshow Collectibles offered. Sideshow does its fair share of shows, but 2015 marked the first time the company made an appearance at NYCC. Though the booth may not have had the same square footage as Sideshow's SDCC presence, it was still packed with loads of incredible sculptures featuring many fan favorites and some of the company's own creations. Most of what was on display at NYCC had been seen before at other conventions, but the more diminutive booth allowed for a more focused presentation. Where the SDCC collection was three or four times larger, that also meant there were that many more products vying for your attention. While it was definitely cool to see so many new things a few months ago, there was definitely some "cool stuff" overload happening. Notably missing from the NYCC booth was a great deal of Hot Toys, which was represented at New York with a handful of First Order Stormtroopers, and that's it. Sideshow put the spotlight on its own goods, including the DC and Marvel premium format figures due to arrive over the course of the next year, and its outstandingly creepy Court of the Dead line. On The Cheap: Get All Of 'The Losers' For Ten Bucks in Vertigo Sale

This week, Comixology launched a pretty big sale on Vertigo books, and as you might expect, the usual suspects are really well represented. Classics like Preacher and Transmetropolitan, long runs like Y The Last Man and 100 Bullets, a pretty huge chunk of Hellblazer, and even more recent hits like American Vampire and Coffin Hill are all well represented, and really? If you don't have Preacher, then getting the entire series for under thirty bucks is a pretty solid deal.

But way down at the bottom of the list, buried near the end of the "More Great Hits!" section, is an even better one: 32 darn-near perfect issues of Andy Diggle and Jock's The Losers, one of the best action adventure comics of this century, for ten bucks.

Welcome to Wet Moon: Revisiting Sophie Campbell's Graphic Novel Series

Let me put my cards on the table: Sophie Campbell is my favorite comic book artist. She has been at least since the Glory series she did with Joe Keatinge, although I was a fan of her work even before that. I was thrilled when her Jem and Holograms series with Kelly Thompson was announced, and it’s one of my very favorite things on the stands right now.

But my favorite comics work she’s done is Wet Moon, a series of graphic novels from Oni Press, which has been ongoing for over a decade. In Wet Moon, Campbell weaves realism with subtle fantasy and horror elements, and follows a large cast of distinct characters. There are six books currently out, and Campbell has said there are at least two more to come.

'Arrow's Damien Darhk Will Crossover With 'Legends of Tomorrow' and 'The Flash'

We don’t yet have the clearest picture as to how Arrow and Flash spinoff Legends of Tomorrow will interact with its predecessors on a regular basis, given all the time-travel involved, but all three series already have at least one unifying character. Current Arrow baddie Damien Darhk will crop up on both Legends and The Flash, with a timey-wimey twist, per Neal McDonough.

Star Wars and Bishoujo Dominate Kotobukiya's NYCC Offerings

Though New York Comic Con isn't typically a show where Kotobukiya reveals many new items, you can always count on the company to tease a handful of never-before-seen pieces. This year, the pickings weren't robust, but they will make fans of Koto's Bishoujo series for statues happy. While there were some nice Star Wars figurines at the booth as well, the primary source of new statues came from the "beautiful girl" series. Both the Harley Quinn and Spider-Gwen teased with silhouette's back at SDCC were given the concept art treatment at NYCC. Harley will be represented by her New 52 Suicide Squad look, which we knew was coming, but is still slightly disappointing. The second version created by Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti is much more interesting, and doesn't make you want to cringe just by glancing at it. Shunya Yamashita's design does the best it can with what he's got to work with, but this piece is already shaping up to pale in comparison to the classic Harley Quinn. Continue reading…

Comic Strip Lit Crit: Step Aside for Kate Beaton's Self-Appraising Heroes & Histories

Kate Beaton's approach to Wonder Woman is perhaps one of the clearest examples of how the acclaimed cartoonist combines brilliant humor with perceptive critical analysis. After several appearances in Hark! A Vagrant, Wonder Woman makes a return six-strip engagement in Beaton's new book, Step Aside, Pops! When we first met this incarnation she was a bitter, sarcastic superheroine just trying to have a smoke, or reluctantly helping an old lady rescue her cat from a tree by yanking it down with her magic lasso. This time around, Beaton gives some clues about why her Wonder Woman might be the way she is. Taking a meeting in "head office," she's told, "the Greek stuff, the outfit, the lasso... it's too weird to deal with" (though a bro with the same affectations somehow works), and gets mansplained by Superman and Batman. At a bar, a fan gushes about how great she thinks Wonder Woman is, without seeming to actually know anything about her. Continue reading…

Marvel's 'Luke Cage' Won't Be A Prequel to 'Jessica Jones'

The moment we learned Marvel’s Luke Cage would first appear in Jessica Jones, the question arose as to how the series might interact with one another in telling the former’s origin. Horrible on Hoth, Subpar on Sullust: My Life in Star Wars Battlefront

I've often thought about what it would be like to actually take part in the Battle of Hoth. In The Empire Strikes Back, we saw only a glimpse of the chaos that ensued once the Imperial Army found the Rebel base on the icy planet, and didn't truly get an idea of the conflict that broke out. It makes sense considering the films follow such a small cast of characters, and can't just spend hours on showing the ins and outs of one space battle. That's why I was excited to dive head first the galactic civil war with Star Wars Battlefront later this year. At least, until I played a little bit of the beta this week at New York Comic Con. Now, don't take that to mean that I've lost all my interest. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm just not all that interested in living out the Battle of Hoth from the Rebel perspective anymore. While the films and comics and books have always talked about the strength and power of the Imperial side of the conflict, you don't truly grasp how daunting a task it must have been for the Rebel Alliance to pull out such tremendous victories until you're planted firmly in their boots. It's impressive that any of the ships escaping Hoth made it out of there alive, especially if any of those Rebel troopers fought as poorly as I did. Continue reading…

It Only Took 1600 Hours to Craft NYCC's Ridiculously Amazing Hulkbuster Cosplay

Even if you didn't make it to New York Comic Con this past weekend, it's likely you heard about the awesome Iron Man Hulkbuster cosplay that towered over all the show's attendees. Developed by Thomas DePetrillo and Extreme Costumes, the massive costume made waves both at the show and online. To be fair, it's pretty easy to stand out when you're in a costume that's 9.5' tall no matter where you are. While a big surprise to many of the attendees at NYCC, Extreme Costumes had actually shot a brief "making of" video in the time leading up to the convention. In the short, DePetrillo can be seen piecing the Hulkbuster together bit by bit, including putting the fine technical touches on the various electrical systems. "I'm not the kind of person that starts with a big block of stone and carves inwards," DePetrillo said. "I'm much more likely to be the guy that starts with nothing, and puts on a million pieces in a row until it looks just right." Continue reading…

Ranger Station Episode 9: For Whom The Bell Trolls

With 800 episodes over the course of 22 years, the Power Rangers television show is arguably the single most successful live-action superhero franchise of all time, and certainly one of the strangest. Adapted from Japan's long-running Super Sentai series, created by manga legend Shotaro Ishinomori, the Power Rangers combined the giant robots and monsters of their Japanese counterpart with a completely different set of secret identities and problems, and became a pop cultural phenomenon. That's why we're looking back with an in-depth guide to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, including its source material, Kyuoryu Sentai Zyuranger, in ComicsAlliance's Ranger Station! This week, Trini collects creepy dolls and the Zyurangers beat up an actual, literal child, so yes, it's going to be a good one. Continue reading…

Square Enix Prepares for the Dawn of Justice at NYCC

Considering how many different shows Square Enix participates in, it's a wonder there were any new figures on display at this year's New York Comic Con. Fortunately for all, the Play Arts line saw some strong new additions this week, with the 2016 Warner Brothers' tentpole Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice getting the most attention. We had seen the standard Superman and Batman figures back at SDCC, but here we got looks at the prototypes for a second Batman figure and what could be the best Wonder Woman Square has ever done. Seriously, Square Enix has dipped the toy quill in the DC Comics fountain before, and the Variant Wonder Woman, while true to Play Arts' style, wasn't exactly the strongest representation of the character. This new iteration, based on Gal Gadot's take on the iconic Amazonian, is incredibly detailed, but more importantly, it's spot-on, unembellished sculpt is the perfect counterpoint to the previous attempt. The articulation is impressive as always, but the real draw comes from that attention to detail Square has been stepping up over the course of the last year. The company's been working with a slightly larger scale than it was in the past, and though it means more expensive figures, it also means way more nuance for each figure. Continue reading…
